Now, I think I have the terminology right...but just in case I will describe what I am referring to...

I removed the air intake hose to clean the intake. I used air intake cleaner and a rag to remove as much of the residue as possible. I used my fingers to prop open the valve and clean as much as possible. I shone a flashlight up the opening and the inside seems pretty darn black and filthy.

I assume there is a way to get into this area to clean it. I am just wondering what the proper/easiest way to access it is? Is there a technique for removing/opening this for cleaning....is it even necessary to clean it?

To get the entire upper air intake clean behind the butterfly, try AMSOIL Power Foam. It will clean up all the residue and get the build up around the intake valves. It's a tune up in a can.

I actually did this just two days ago also while replacing my alternator. My dad saw it and pointed out a caution on the throttle body that told you not to use air intake cleaner, so I wiped out what I could... cleaning it did seem to get a whole lot of crud out of there though, not sure if that will help my performance at all, Im sure it couldn't hurt :). I haven't driven it much since cleaning it out though... I looked back in there with a flashlight and it seemed to be somewhat clean so I didn't bother with it too much

warning sticker

I saw that sticker but I sort of ignored it. Supposedly there is some special coating on the metal to prevent buildup....but you know what...IT DOESN'T WORK, the throttle body is full of black crud....so who cares if the coating comes off?

I also have thought about cleaning the throttle body, but did not because of the warning. How much will it hurt/help to clean it???
