Climate Control - Not Blend door or accuator

Or at least I don't think so. I thought I had the typical broken blend door issue on m '98 Limited and ordered a new one along with a new accuator while I was at it. Before I took the old accuator off I set the temp to 90 on auto and thought I recalled seeing the shaft turn. "Aha! It is the blend door!" or so I thought. I disconnected the old accuator so that it wasn't hanging from the wires while I waited for the new one. The new one arrived, I connected it and nothing on any setting. I reconnected the old one and nothing. Before I started cutting the plenum I took the truck to the local A/C specialist and he suggested getting a factory accuator as the aftermarket ones are often defective. For $35 why not? While I was waiting for that part to come in I decided to see if I could move the blend door by inserting a hex wrench where the accuator shaft goes. Bingo! the door moved easily and the A/C is now cold again. The factory accuator came in and that doesn't work either. I am now second guessing myself as to whether I ever saw the old one move in the first place. What "upstream" of the accuator could be causing this? There must be a thermostat somewhere. Is it behind that little vent on the dashboard? Anything else that commonly fails? I can live with it the way it is now but the heat in the winter might be a little more difficult to fine tune with a hex wrench. Thanks in advance.

For the EATC electronic climate controls, there is a self test to do and codes will be displayed.

Interior temperature should be 40~90F
Ignition switch in the RUN position

1) press the OFF and FLOOR buttons at the same time.
2) then press the AUTOMATIC button within 2 seconds.

Watch display window for codes. report back.

To exit self test and clear all stored codes in the EATC- Press the defrost button, display window will light up.
EATC turns off. Codes cleared.

Always do this after the self test mode before turning off the system.

I have the manual 3 knob climate controls in my 98.

I have electronic control the code I got was 024 which is the actuator this is the 3rd one I v had on still have the same problem.On back probe I have power to the accuator but way under 5 v.

Does the actuator move, the shaft rotate, when you adjust the temperature? You should be able to make it move with the temp setting. I have the blend door issue on two 98 Limited's, the actuator operates properly, but the door rarely moves at all.

Based on your information and my own research. I would get a refurbished EATC head unit. There are several options on Ebay.
