My '98 Explorer horn and cruise control stopped working at the same time. I've researched the forum and found that the likely culprit is the clock spring. The Ford part costs about $125. I've found a number of aftermarket clock springs offered by vendors, but I can't find one for the '98 Explorer. Can someone direct me to a lower cost aftermarket clock spring?
Thanks.

I had already checked Rockauto, NAPA and Advance and didn't find it.
Thx for the offer of a used unit, but I want to be sure I install a serviceable part.

2001 Sport clock spring

I'm looking for a clock spring currently getting the 32 code and I believe I caused it when I was replacing the rack and pinion that got shattered when someone's trailer hitch smashed the passenger side rim and sent the rods flying to pieces thru the housing. After I removed the rack I turned the steering control arm several different times then read somewhere that I shouldn't do that because it ruins the clock spring. Is that true? But I replaced so many things this past year I just can't believe that the lowest price I can find is around $50 for a used part.

when you go here

they start at $86 before shipping

Thx, but this is the same OEM part I've seen elsewhere $125+. It appears that there is no aftermarket part for the 98 Ex (though Dorman makes them for other Ford cars). My only choice is pay the OEM price or try to find a used unit.

I found a source of a used clock spring in another thread. His name is Karl Babiak, he's located in Pennsylvania and his e-mail is kbabiak@comcast.net. He knew exactly which part I needed, he checked it for serviceability, charged a modest price and shipped it to me the same day. I have the part in hand, and confirmed that it does fit and it is serviceable. I highly recommend Karl for your parts needs.

Clock Spring Problem-1998 Explorer(Limited) in Maui

Aloha from Maui,

My name is Tom and I have a 1998 Ford Explorer Limited Edition. I have
horn cruise control and radio controls on my steering wheel. The Ford part,
I'm told, cost $282 from the dealer. Of course being on Maui we get hosed
on prices. I ordered a part on line from an auto recycler. They told me they had the right part (with horn, cruise and radio controls) for $50.00.
The part came and of course it was the wrong part. I gave them my vin number and told them all the features.....still got the wrong part. What is the correct part number? My 1998 Explorer Limited was made in 1997, if that makes a difference. The one I have is marked: F87B-14A664-DA. I'm assuming that is the part number. It is the wrong one for my Explorer. Does anyone have the right clock spring or at least the right part number?

I contacted your friend Karl. He said he had one, but is the same wrong one I was sent. Do you have the part number of the correct one? I have a Limited Explorer with radio and cruise controls on the steering wheel. I'm told the correct number may be: F87Z 14A664 EC. Still looking

Have you guys been able to narrow down the part number for this clock spring? I have the pictured steering wheel, which has cruise control, radio, and A/C controls too. Kbabiak didn't have the correct clock spring for me unfortunately.

I also have the digital HVAC controls below the radio on the dashboard, if that makes a difference.

Bump. Can't seem to find a definitive answer on the clock spring for that particular steering wheel.

LOL, I need one too:D But I just need one for a basic set up...Horn and air bag, no cruise or radio controls

I know there are at least dozens of people on here who have had to replace their clock springs, and some of them had to have been for this steering wheel.
