I don't know if this applies to your explorer but my 99 has a stub shaft that comes out of the right side ot the dif going to a bearing or joint of some sorts, and then to the passenger side tire. I was informed by a couple of mechanics that the bearing or whatever is in there that can wear out and cause clunking in 4x4. Unfortunately it's a somewhat expensive part because you need to buy both little shafts.
I does feel like something with the front diff. There is also some sort of shift collar too.it drive fine in 2 wd so it has to be front diff. Problem.thanks.
Having trouble only when i put it in 4 wheel drive there is bad cluck in front right
If you get one cluck when you left, you have one chicken. Two clucks when you turn right you have many chickens under the hood. Have vehicle checked by a pro ASAP. Preferably a farmer.
But it is most likely your cv joints.
