I hear a "clunking" noise in the front end of my '95 4WD XLT (148K miles) when first starting out from a cold stop (in 2WD mode). After a few blocks it disappears. It also stops when I apply the brake. It appears to be synchronized with the tire rotation. I don't hear anything at higher speeds (say, over 10-15 mph, and certainly not a trace at highway speeds). It is very intermittent...can go days without a sound, but then will start occuring every morning, or after every time the Explorer has been sitting for a while. Everything seems to be ok and tight after a "crawl uner" inspection. Can anyone help me diagnose this strange clunking noise. Thanks.

Welcome to the site... it sounds as if you have a cv joint or u-joint problem....

Is the noise a low speed clunk(thud)?
If so its probably the sway bar bushings! Had mine done today.$175.
