99 explorer hung in low ranger after making clanking noise

Hello, I have a 1999 explorer 4x4 last week it started making a binding/clanking sound while my wife drove to town today she said it made the sound then lost power (engine still running) when a friend went to get it they were able to drive it. When I get home from work i go diagnose it and find its running fine just stuck in low range (no idiot lights or nothing on dash) I have done the brown wire mod and removed the front drive shaft trying any and everything i can think of to pin point the problem. Ok shifting fork for range selection broken replaced that an added a new chain for safe measure fixed one
problem but still making clunking/binding noise any thoughts or ideas?
