clunking when shifting into R and also Drive

Has anyone had this problem with their transmissions(03 xlt, 5R55w?). When putting it into reverse gear it's a very hard clunk. At the same time here lately, when putting it into Drive from the hard clunking reverse, it takes a few seconds to ingage into drive. Please-please gave me an avenue to go on this.

you may wanna check your u-joints to start off... let us know how u-joints look and im sure others will jump in after the u-joints have been axed off the list....

After thinking about it, what is the best way to check the U joints. Thanks. Andrew

Maybe your slip joint needs greased. That solved my clunk problem that I thought was from bad u-joints.
