I have a 96 Explorer and when I push in the clutch it makes a whinning or Whirring sound. It seems to go away the higher the gear, it's worst in 1st and 2nd, but I'm sure it's still there and I can't hear it. I just had the master cylinder replaced about 5K milies ago and the clutch replaced about 20K miles ago. I had to put fluid in my master clyinder, but I haven't noticed any spots in my driveway from leaks. Any idea which it could be, clutch or clyinder?

I think it could the throwout bearing.

If you can feel vibration in the clutch pedal, tranmitted back through the "
juice" in the slave system, no doubt about throwout failure. Those damn things have more plastic in them than metal......It IS possible to replace only the bearing, but after seeing how chintzy the seal was in the slave, I personally would replace the whole damn slave, bearing and all. Going back in soon after yanking one of these apart is no fun! imp
