I still have the 1996 for explorer and the check engine light keps going on and off. it has been off for the whole week then just decides to come back on today. I pulled the code with the reader I just purchased and it read P0401 EGR Flow Insufficient. The previous owner changed the egr valve and he said the put on on that was better than factory. The Napa (echlin) part number is 2-26342 I am wondering if it not compatable with my truck. Can someone tell me what else I can check. I did clean most of the sensors (maf) and idle control valve.

Your EGR is most likely fine. These last for a long time and there is really nothing to it. You probably have a bad DPFE, also know as the EGR sensor. There are only a few components to the EGR system, so if the EGR valve is fairly new all there is left is the hoses, tube and the DPFE. the DPFE is a very common thing to crap out and most likely your problem. They take 5 minutes to replace.

OK here it is I went to get a new DPFE sensor but as I was on the way there the check engine light went off. I still purchased it and changed it over but the car run just like it did very sound. I will just have to see it it changes as far as chugging gas. The check engine light did not come all day as we were driving it. I hope this works. i notice the old DPFE was gummed up with gunk on the barbs where the hoses connect to and it was very dirty inside.

You can't go wrong with a new DPFE. Even tough the light goes on and off it could still be defective. just on its way out. If your light doesn't come back after a couple of hours it should be OK. my DPFE code always came back after 2 drive cycles and 30 minutes. As you can see this is a chinzy part, 96eb told me that they get moisture inside and become defective. The DPFE will improve your emissions, it wont really make the car run better like changing the engine or something. it is something you will barely notice if it all but your e-test will have major improvements.

Now you see why I told you to lay of the AC and save your money for other things.

Hahahaha but I really need my AC I was burning up today all windows down and it was still hot. I have just been spoiled with having the AC in my other cars and my doggies miss it to. I have to now change the pads and rotors on all four but I knew that when I purchased it. When the inspection was done they said I had 20/30 left. once that is done in May I will then save once again to have the AC looked at.

Is this a 5.0 or a 4.0?

it is a 4L 6 Cyl

DPFE Replacement on 5.0

Just to clear the air on replacing this on the 5.0's..
It is not as easy as doing it on the 4.0's because it is located at the rear of the engine and the screws are 11/32 locknuts that are hard to get to.

I replaced mine yesterday 4/28/2010 and am waiting for the light to go out...Hopefully...

I agree DPFE sensor for the code. And to cruz38, pull the negative battery cable for about 10 minutes and it will reset the computer and turn the light off.

Doh!

Geez, Thanks!! I completely forgot about being able to do that..

DPFE and EGR Valve

Well I had to replace the EGR Valve as well. I reset the computer and so far no Check engine light..
