I finally got my ELM327 adapter and set up my forscan on my tablet. I’ve been dealing with my wrench light popping on whenever I get on freeway, everything seems to drive fine although my RPM’s seem to run a little higher. I was thinking my vehicle was in limp mode staying in 4th gear but when I pressed my OD button it down shifted although didn’t display the OD off light. Every time I turn my car off and restart the engine the light goes away. I can drive around town and it turns on very rarely when I do that it mostly seems to be the freeway that kicks the light on.

Yesterday was the first time I used forscan and I was able to pull 2 codes from the pcm, I pulled P741 and P1000ff. The P1000ff was probably because I cleared my DTC’s with my other scantool, I occasionally get a p0442 (small evap leak) that I haven't found yet and if recently cleared it. That seems to pop up randomly and I need to hook a smoke machine up and see what causing that code. Anyway I decided to take a bit of a road trip yesterday and hook forscan up to it to monitor the car. Now I’m not very familiar with forscan so I’ve been learning as I go, but other than code reading everything else with that program is new to me.
So sure enough I got on the freeway and a few minutes later the wrench came on. I got to my next stop and then I was able to park and read the code, I couldn’t read anything while the engine was running so I turned it off and then turned the key back onto the on position again. This is when I pulled those codes and googled them, the p1000 code sounds like nothing more than “readiness tests not completed” after clearing DTC’s. The p0741 obviously a concerning code relates to the Torque converter slipping more than anticipated. Like I mentioned earlier, as soon as that light pops on I feel like my rpms run a little higher especially on the freeway.

So I goofed around with forscan and I told it to monitor the TCC while driving with the oscilloscope. I plugged it all in, got on the freeway and started monitoring. Low and behold the light never came back on, I drove over 100 miles with it running flawlessly. On my way back I unplugged everything and again drove 100 miles without my wrench popping on. I haven’t driven it today and I’ll take it out on the freeway to see what happens, maybe I’m lucky.

Has anyone dealt with any similar issues? I’ve found a few posts about wrench lights popping on and off but was hoping someone could help shed some light on this issue or point me in a right direction. My gen 2 5.0 is in with my mechanic for an engine swap, so in a week I’ll be able to park my Gen 4 and slowly take my time on it figuring this out. If not I’ll take it to my mechanic but needless to say I am sick of tranny issues with this damn vehicle.

One more question, could an alternator that’s going bad cause the wrench light and or the CEL to pop on occasionally? I replaced my battery a couple months back and when it was going bad my airbag light would pop on. I never tested the alternator and am thinking about running to the auto store to see if they’ll test it for me.

The designers have gone "balls-out" with using their power to alert us to problems; the electronic ones relating to battery/alternator I personally didn't need, IMO. The wrench icon I thought previously (in my '04 anyway) was reserved for the most serious or safety-related issues: it came on shortly before giving me "Forced Engine Idle", no fun at all. The minor issues have never lit the wrench, but CEL a'plenty!. During one episode, before I got things sorted out, it insisted on first throwing "4X4 HIGH" flashing, before "ABS" on, I thought something was haywire with 4X4; not so. Did find, after plenty of cussing, it was telling me 4X4 function was disabled during ABS issue. imp

@imp Doesn’t seem to ever be a cut and clear straight answer does it. I’m baffled by my issue although I shouldn’t be, I’ve had transmission problems since I took ownership of my Ex. I’ve had it rebuilt, I’ve timkered with it etc... I fix one thing only for a problem to pop up elsewhere after x amount of miles. Sometimes I wish the transmission would just explode so I’d at least have a difinitive answer lol.

I gotta admit after all my *****ing that in reality, this '04, bought with 91K, has proven to be one of the more reliable vehicles of all those I've had. No really major trouble, the worst: ABS Module died, multiple-symptoms and codes, took a lot of learnin' to find that. Throttle Body (drive by wire) put me in "Forced Engine Idle", replaced it and trouble gone. TCC solenoid broke, new solenoid pack, fixed. That's it! imp
