These codes began appearing on my '98 XLT 4.0 OHV a few weeks ago. The first code was P0761, Shift Solenoid C. I took it to a transmission shop and they replaced that solenoid plus the TCC solenoid. That didn't fix the problem and in the process the other two codes appeared. The shop was unable to determine the cause. They checked the wiring and said it's ok. I've cleared the codes several times and they keep returning with CEL on and O/D light flashing. The last time I cleared them, I drove about 2 miles and the O/D light started flashing. At 11 miles, the CEL came on. Now, the O/D light is intermittent - it'll quit blinking and then after a few miles come back on. I'm thinking that codes P1101 (MAF sensor out of self test range) and P1124 (Throttle position sensor out of self test range) might be the result of the P0761. I had the transmission rebuilt about 18,000 miles ago. The truck runs good and shifts normally, when the O/D light is not blinking.

Prior to these codes, it would occasionally produce a very loud screeching noise when shifted into gear that kind of sounds like the starter is running while the engine is running. If shifted back into park, the noise stops. This was happening about a third of the time. I've been trying to record it so now it has quit happening.

Any ideas? This is driving me nutz.

Thanks.

Solenoid P0761

I have just been diagnosed the above code as well. May I ask how much it was to replace the Solenoid?
Thanks!

If they replaced the seliniod and checked the wiring, it may be a problem with the valve body. That might also be the screaching noise you heard. As far as the MAF and TPS I wouldn't think they are related... I would try to clean then and see what happens.

What type of warranty did you get the the tranny rebuild? Did they rebuild the valve body also, or just the bands and friction plates?

I finally took it to the dealership last Tuesday afternoon and they are still working on it - the meter is still running. They ran diagnostics and turned up 2-3 other codes and wanted to drop the pan and check out the throttle body. When they did, they said that the solenoids weren't installed right, who knows, and that it was a mess. Somewhere along the line, they started it and it actually made the deafening screeching that happened periodically. They thought the Exploder was going to blow. After that, they wanted to pull the tranny and open it up. The story I got when they did was that the original rebuilder, who I thought I could trust, had left out a thrust washer and the "front" planetary gears were all chewed up, which probably accounts for the noise. Now, they are fixing it.

As for the cost of the solenoids, The shift solenoid was $90, the torque converter solenoid was $120. The total with fluid, filter, labor, and tax was $387.80. This was done at a second shop, not the one that did the overhaul.

The overhaul warranty was 12,000 miles and I've run over that by about 6,000. I'll be paying that shop a visit.

The transmission is going to be worth?? more than the rest of the vehicle by the time they get done with me.
