98 Ford Explorer XLT
Hi, New to this but really looks like a great site! Need some advise, I have a 98 Explorer XLT 4.0 and when I crank it cold the motor starts and the idle dies and unless I keep my foot on the gas the motor will die. A mechanic told me it was the "idle air control valve " and it needed to be replaced. Is this correct or could it be another problem as he told me it was quite expensive to replace, around $300

oh... and welcome! this place is awesome:thumbsup:

And if you need to replace the IAC for your truck, it's about $100 at AutoZone. (Or at least that's what their website said. You'll also need 5 minutes.

On top of that, find a new mechanic, he's trying to rip you off on that thing.

For a short-term fix...to get you around town...you can always just turn up your idle. The screw is on the throttle body. Remember that the RPMs drop 200-300 when you put it in drive (if you have an AT). Your computer may not be able to compensate for the added air at idle, so it might throw out a trouble code (P1506).

welcome
