So I am creeping up on 100k w/ my 97 5.0 and was wondering if anyone had any sugestions of things to service and or keep an eye on. Recently I have replaced my plugs/wires, flushed the tranny, and did the normal oil change.

As long as you have been good about fluid changes in the past then you should have nothing to worry about in that department. Just remember to keep that up. Check your ball joints, especally if you have not replaced them yet... If you need to replace them get a greasable one such as Moog. The Moog's is also nice cuz you wont have to replace the entire upper control arm if you need to do uppers again and they are greasable... Sway bar end links are always a problem... I like to keep one or two in the tool box at all times. For some reason I go through alot of tie rod ends. It may be related to my soft sand driving... That is about it....

I am sure others will chime in with other things I have forgotten...

Thanks Jeff. I have been pretty lucky with my X. Other than the normal stuff, oil changes, tranny flush, brakes, etc..I have had no major problems. However I did notice one thing last night. I have an AWD and was caught off guard when I got stuck in the snow and realized that onle my front passenger and rear driver side wheels were spinning.. Anyone know if that the norm with AWD?

Yes it is. You have an open front differential (non locking non limited slip)

You might have on open rear diff as well. My '97 Mountaineer AWD has a limited slip rear diff.

you can tell by looking on the sticker with the build date that is located on the drivers side front door. On the bottom the codes for front torsion bars, rear leaf springs paint/interior colors and axle gear ratios.

If the axle code starts with "D" you have a limited slip rear.

Mine reads D4.. So if that does mean that I have a limited slip, why was only one back tire spinning in the snow? I may have some issues..?

Change vital fluids, like coolant and diff fluids, which aren't done very often and get forgotten. Air filter is one thing to replace, check your brake pads / calipers, check brake fluid / power steering fluid, check your exhaust system for leaks and rust, and inspect your shocks for wear or damage.

Other than that, not much else I can think of. Definately do your fluids though, that's an important one.
