After replacing a transmission and having trouble with the new one, the local auto parts yard called his most trusted transmission shop. Here is what he said is most commonly wrong with Sport Trac transmissions if you have flares and rpm issues, and the fluid is full and clean.

1. Transmission Cooler is plugged. Feel both the input line and output line after driving to check the temperature of the Cooler and if it is working or plugged. (If you replaced the transmission, these same problems would have been occurring with the original transmission too.)

2. The transmission filter is wrong. The clerk at the auto parts store grabbed you the incorrect filter and gave you an Explorer's filter rather than the Sport Trac/Ranger filter.

3. When replacing the transmission filter BOTH o-rings were not installed. To maintain the air-tight seal for suction, each lead of the filter must have its o-ring installed or you will end up with problems. (This was part of my problem, the mechanic did not install one of the o-rings.)

4. Check for corrosion of the wires inside the harness at both ends of the transmission's wiring.

5. The rubber plug on the inside wall is not completely seated correctly.

6. The replacement transmission was not programmed at a dealership. The computer IS required to be re-programmed as it learned the shift points from the bad transmission.

The issues I had been having with the replacement transmission, even after Ford re-programming, were:
* When first shifting into Drive, it would rev up around 2,000 rpms then "catch" and take off hard.
** A flare around 20 mph when attempting to shift from 1st into 2nd.
*** The problems would disappear once the transmission warmed up after a few miles.

It just shows how simple things can have a big effect on how the transmission performs, thanks for the helpful information.
