Common problem, bad gas mileage, normal?

I did search for this topic and got some vague info, but I'm picky ...So, Being a college student, driving around campus as well as 120 miles home occasionally gas kills my wallet. My question is what to expect out of my '95 xlt 4x4? I'm currently getting around 13.5 mpg. Is there some additive or gadget (tornado) that will actually help? Thanks!

That seems low for mileage.

I believe someone on here dynoed an Explorer with and without the Tornado and it showed no difference. So stay away from those things. Listen to Aldive when it comes to gas mileage. 13mpg is sure low, but then again your probably doing a lot of city driving. Good luck.

How about a basic tune up. Air filter, plugs and wires. Synthetic oil helps as well.

If you're doing mostly in-town driving, 13.5 mpg is fairly normal for your truck.

Now, on the highway, you should be getting at least 18 mpg. At least.

And as was said, you can do a lot of things to get your mileage to 15 in town.

A tornado is really made for carburated motors and do show some (minor) improvements in HP and MPG on them ... given the nature of fuel injection you already have those benefits inherently so you don't get any real gain ...

I'd check for Codes first and fix any problems and then plugs, wires and a complete fluid change (motor, tranny, transfer box, diffs) and also check brakes and bearings

I bought a '91 EB in late April and get 17 MPG city and 21.8 MPG highway without AC (Haven't checked with AC which I just got going a couple of weeks ago)

Don't waste your time! A friend of mine bought a tornado for his Expedition. He didn't notice a change in power or gas milelage. In fact, the thing fit so loosely in the intake tube that it rattle around and made noise...... . He had to wrap it in duct tape to stop the rattle.

I'm with the other guys. Make sure your truck is in good running order. Tune-up, tire pressure, clean the fuel system, etc. I had a 94 Ex and it would nudge 20 on a road trip but as soon as you hit the city it dropped to mid-teens. Your not that far off if your doing mixed driving
