Concern over 1st production year of new design

I guess our issue in thinking was not that things will break and be covered, but more along superseded parts, improvements, and changes that wouldn't be on the initial vehicles if Ford is made aware of an issue during production... Sometimes something even as simple as fasteners being changed can make a huge difference. Just being overly cautious I guess... :dunno:

That is why they issue TSB's. Any vehicle is under continuous change by the manufacturer, and that's the way it should be.

Saw the first one on the road today, a white one. Just about every one ordered by folks on this site is white. Is it because of Fords advertising? Just wondering.

I personally had placed an order for Grey but I went back and changed it the next day to the Plat White because I thought that it will hide dirt and scrathes better. Always liked the darker colours but I just notice scratches on them so easy.

My last 2 were dark colors, dark blue. For the 2011 I was thinking of the grey or bourdeux but went with gold leaf, I liked the monochromatic look with the light stone interior.

Gold Leaf here as well. Similar to my current Mountaineer. Haven't seen the exact color yet.

I saw the color on a new Taurus, just the right shade. I was concerned it might be too gold.

We are thinking about getting an Edge with the new eco-boost when they come out. I am a little concerned about the reliability of the new engine, but I figure the warranty should cover any major problems if there are any.

Somebody more knowledgeable than me can set me straight but it's my understanding that the 3.5L in the Explorer is just a re-tuned version of their standard V6 in a few other Ford vehicles.

I personally will never own a white vehicle unless it is used and I don't have the option.

I ordered red candy. Haven't had red since my 91 Mustang.

For the guy thinking about a 2002-2004 better think again there was a problem with the rear ends in them they worked on mine 5 times and finally gave me my money back on a 2006. If you are looking for a used one the 2006 - 2010 would be the model I would look at. My wife loves the new 2011 just waiting for it to get built and delivered ordered it 15 th Jan.

Since the 2011 Explorer is a new design, I have some concerns with reliability, and usually like to wait a year or two till all the bugs are worked out.

Some new designs have really had some serious issues over the years.

Does anyone else have similar concerns?

Hey marc515,

This is Seni from Ford Customer Service. The 2011 Explorer is a very reliable vehicle; however I understand your concern. Stringent testing during the development of the 2011 Explorer helped ensure its quality, reliability, and durability. Moreover, the SUV durability testing is more rugged than passenger car testing. The all-new Explorer is also backed by a Powertrain Limited Warranty, 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. Check it out for yourself by contacting your local dealer to set up a demonstration drive. :)

I have seen some of the videos on the testing of the vehicle and am quite satisfied about its quality, reliability, and durability. However, I do not think the same "due diligence" was done when choosing the tires. The ones I refer to are the Hankook H426. I have queried this tire on the Internet and I have yet to read a positive review of it. In fact, customer reviews seem to agree that it is a useless, perhaps even dangerous tire, on any surface other than a warm dry one. There are even posts on this forum by those that have recently taken delivery of a new Explorer saying that this tire is very ineffective on any surface with even a little snow, even in the 'snow' mode. One poster had problems getting into his slightly inclined driveway.
Some are even looking to have the Hankooks replaced by the dealer upon delivery. Choosing this tire as OEM equipment does not seem to be in the customer's best interest and it definitely raises a safety concern. As well, this issue is doing nothing to enhance the tire manufacturer's name. If Ford was genuinely concerned as well, it should offer the consumer a possible rebate that can be used on purchasing either an upgraded Hankook tire or another brand of their choice. I will definitely be speaking to my dealership about this issue and see if anything can be worked out.
