is there any way to mount a cone air filter in a stock airbox??? 2001 ford explorer sport trac.....or would i have to mod it to where I would have to put a mod in the box...?

I am adding CAI piping when I have more money later.....

Seriously just buy a pre-fabbed cai from K&N or something. This is coming from a guy who for months has been trying to figure out the best way to make his half-way-done cai work the best. And I've already spent more than I had ever planned. I wouldn't go the custom route again for this; but I don't have a lot of tools and materials available to me (rivet gun, aluminum, piping, etc.) , so it's difficult cause you have to plan out everything perfectly before you buy or you risk wasting a lot of money. If you have the time, tools, and materials, then go for it, but otherwise it can be a pain.

If you just want a quick and inexpensive mod, just cut the bottom of your air box off. Try to leave anything that mounts to the fender. This will give you a lot more air to pull in. I think if you search "air box mod" you will find a few threads on doing this.

^I did that originally and it worked great. My current intake (my custom PATI one) isn't any better.

I am going to try and put in a 3in MAF mount and bolt the oem MAF adapter and intake hose to the new mount into the airbox so I would then have a small 'ledge' within the box to allow the cone filter to tighten around. Then I will drill holes in the box to allow for more air entry. think this will work?? I dont know how big the hole into the box actually is..but worth a try....

If you defeat the intake systems pulling in air from OUTSIDE the engine compartment you'll only have a "air intake" not a "cold air intake" ............... Replace the drop-in filter, if you must, with a high performance version.;)

would the stock airbox be too restrictive for a cone filter??

Take off that little cone thing at the front of the box and replace the filter. I'd say that's a good step. It'll allow more air in; not all of it will be cold air, but I would think that a good amount of it will be.

Ranchero what do you mean? If I do it like i described, wouldn't it be just like a s and b or a volant?? the box and everything??

The box wouldn't be "too restrictive" for the cone, but the mods you'd have to do to get the cone to mount properly seem excessive.

I have the money to buy the pre fabbed one....but its so expensive. seems like there arent meany deals out there

Not many, if any, non-high performance modded vehicles benefit from CAI's that I''ve seen. CAI's that draw air from under the hood is just a means of lightening your wallet IMO. I can rant on this if you wish....:D They "look" pretty though.

If you can put a cone in the sealed box that draws air from outside you may help it a little bit. I doubt it but you may. If you open it up to the heat under the hood you're whizzing in your boots. Again, IMO.

If you are going to go thru all the effort, why bother keeping the box at all? figure out -since you are going to buy a cone filter - get rid of the box all together and figure out how to mount the maf so it isnt just hanging and bouncing around. then make a baffel to keep the underhood air away from it.

Im sure I saw a thread on doing this exact thing somewhere on here.

Im making an intake for mine just to get the noise :D

We have to beat this dead horse every week. The stock airbox is the best intake performance wise, period. Ford engineers are better engineers than the third rate engineers that come up with these aftermarket designs (some exclusions obviously). They're money-makers, not power makers. Get a drop in K&N and get the best intake temps and flow. There are many threads on here by people that went to the "cold air" kits and switch back, proving the stock airbox draws colder air.

If you're like Jstcrux and just want sound, though, hey, it's not my $400.

If it's sound effects you want, add a "Tornado" and turbo exhaust
tip after you've butchered a perfectly functional stock airbox. ;)

I dont spend $400 for sound, i spend about 30 minutes to get the sound. I made an intake for my car (Saturn SL2) and it made a lot of difference, sound and power wise. nothing to say for mpg. I have read on here alot tho that the explorers do not benefit much from these intakes. After cutting my air box open, I noticed a little better take off and easier passing on the highway. Again tho, nothing to say for mpg. After looking over the rest of the intake on my Ex I decided to leave it alone because there is not much improvment to be made over the existing intake tube. I think an open cone filter with a baffle is going to do exactly what a $400 intake will do, and still get the sound. You just dont get to advertise under your hood with a pretty sticker.

That's my point. It WILL do exactly what the expensive ones will do: raise your intake temperature.

Okay...so drop in. and I hear that taking the silencer out makes some decent noise too.... Will my tuner hone in some power at least?? I am looking to do some hauling and I am gonna need some umph....
