My '93 xlt has the towing package. My understanding is the towing package comes with 3.73's, however - my door has the axles listed as code 41 - which is 3.27 if memory serves. Did the original owner (my parents) get the wrong gears in the truck? I checked the axle and can't find anything referencing the gear ratio. Also - if I do have 3.73's, is that sufficient for 31" tires? I won't be doing a tin of off-roading for about 6-8 months anyhow, but I want to prepare for the changes...

Ok - Update... I just located the original sticker for my truck. It does have 3.27's. Guess I'll stick with the truck being sluggish for a while - the thought of 1200-1500 to re-gear is tough to swallow at this point Dead Link Removed

It must be a common thing for Ford to list the wrong gear ratio on their vin. I awlays check the axle tag to determine the gear ratio.

Jon,

I have the 4.10 gears with 265/75-R16's which are about 31.6" tires. I think that this setup is adequate, though I'm a bit disappointed in the acceleration in overdrive. Of course, with the SOHC engine, it doesn't reach its peak torque until about 3000 RPM, so I'm usually lugging the engine a bit.

My opinion it to try it and see how it works. I'm pretty sure that you have the 4.0 OHV engine, which is tuned to pull at a little lower RPM, so it might work out.

BTW, there's an interesting chart at www.4lo.com that shows RPM at various gearing and tire sizes. Note that this chart does not compensate for overdrive.

Jon,
I ordered my '94 Explorer with trailer towing package, 3:27s, and limited slip. So these were available back then. I have a white sticker on the backside of the front axle proclaiming it is a 3:27 too.

Yes, mine is very sluggish. I should have gotten a 3:55.
