As some of you know I am still in the process of building my Explorer. If not, you can see pics of the front end in the Projects section.

The front end was built by me (tubing) to take up as little space as possible for maximum tire size with less lift.

This limits me as to where I can mount the air filter and MAS. In an ideal world, I could still run the stock air tube with the MAS hooked up to it and get the KKM kit or something similar.

But I don't have that option.

What I need to know is if anyone has hooked the MAS up to the throttle body via a short piece of rubber hose and then used the colincal filter right to the MAS? If so, where did you get what you used?

This would solve my problem. Thanks.

Check on RPS but there was a thread about this late last year, basically the MAS needs to be at least 10x the distance from the TB as the diameter of the intake tube, so if you are using a 3 inch intake tube it would need to be roughly 30" between the MAS and TB. This has something to do with a delay that occurs between when you step on the gas and the MAS responds to the increased airflow.

Ya, I'd say the minimum distance is 20-24", knowing about how the sensors output data.

I know that a lot of other ford vehicles are well under the 20"-24" rule so there is probably some type of calibration in the EEC depending on the type of vehicle. This may be correctable with a custom chip but I'm not sure how much they can change with those. Good Luck.

That is how I wanted to attach the filter to the MAS.

But I was hoping I could get away with mounting the MAS to the TB with a piece of 3" rubber tbing. Maybe not.

I'll figure something out.

Thanks!

cory, why not just a full-blown snorkel set up for it?

That's kinda what I was thinking. You're for sure doing enough stuff already to add a bit more!

A snorkel would add wind resistance... ;)
I would recommend two 90" elbows and directing backwards towards the master cylinder. You may have to angle it down a bit. This puts it on the other side of the engine, so you need to extend the wires for the MAF

i dont think coryl is going to have to worry too much about wind resistance:D

If it turns out that you need the 20 or 30 inches between the TB and MAS, how 'bout running it into the passenger compartment?(or whats left of it!) ;)
