So this is kind of a continuation of this thread: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=374657
'94 XLT 4x4, 250K km on odometer

Fuel filter and FPR are replaced, and I recently got the fuel pump but still have to replace it. Still chugging along (literally).

Recently I had the CEL come on (first time ever!) and ran the codes.
Nothing came up in the KOEO except for one in memory:
186 - Fault in injector width pulse circuit / high (I have no idea what this is)

In KOER, I got these:
116 - Coolant temp higher or lower than expected
538 - Insufficient RPM change during KOER Dynamic Response Test

Didn't think much of it and figured I'd get around to posting on here and asking about them.

Tonight, after making a few short stops and while driving home on the highway, the CEL came on 3-4 times, primarily during acceleration fro a stop or up a small hill. Previous to this, the acceleration usually felt choppy and came in pulses, but when the CEL came on, the acceleration seemed to smooth out. Made it home ok. Turned the vehicle off and went to grab my code reader. Did the KOEO test and had the same results as before, 118 in memory.

Went to turn the engine on for the KOER and that's when things started to go bad. Engine would run very rough and slowly, really chugging for about 20 seconds. Hitting the gas pedal just made it worse. No biggie, I've had this issue before. Took a small screwdriver and a rag and drained off a good amount of air out of the fuel rail. Usually after that it starts, but not this time. it barely would start and then die, same roughness. Tried with the fuel rail again and got more gas than air, same result when running. Tried a third time and had just gas out of the rail. Started again, and it ran rough for a few seconds then smoothed out and got to around 800 rpm, Good, problem solved, or so I thought. I went to give it a little gas, RPM's plummeted, ran rough and chugged again for 15 to 20 seconds and died once more. Tried a couple more times with no success.

Since I still had the code reader, I tried the KOEO to see if I got anything new, and I did. This time I got a:
565 - Canister purge solenoid circuit fault, and the usual 186 in memory.

Any help in sorting all this out is appreciated. This is my main vehicle to get to work, and I work in a few days. I cant be without a vehicle, so I need to get this figured out and fixed SOON!

Update: Went out to start it again this morning. Didn't get it to go the first time, but it did start the second time. Able to rev it up and ran it at around 1500 rpm for a few minutes. Idled a little rough, but is cold.

I'll warm it up later and see if anything comes up on the KOER.

The vast majority of engine problems in first gen ex are related to the fuel system. Unfortunately, cel codes cannot diagnose this, they only point out symptoms. The very first thing any ex owner should do is a fuel pressure test. It is cheap, easy to do, and rules out a lot of problems. Procedure is well documented, see link at the bottom of this post.

Well I already know I got issues there. I had pressure issues before replacing the FPR and fuel filter. After replacing those, pressure issues are still there (10 psi with key on, 20-25 psi when running), so thats why i figured the fuel pump is next to be replaced. Not looking forward to it... I'll check the pressure again this afternoon.
