I am looking at a 95 Explorer with Control Trac 4x4 system. Is it good or bad for mild trail riding? Durable or not durable?

Also is the 95 limited to how much lift you can do? It seems to me there was an issue with 95 and 96's on lift. Probably the biggest I would tire that I would want is a 32 on it. Can that be done with TT and shackles or will it need a body lift?

Thanks for all the help!! I have been looking for about a month now and I am ready to buy!!

control track on a 95-96 is 2hi 4 auto and 4low, if you are doing trails you could just put it into 4low and be just fine. as for 32's you could do it with at tt and shackles, but you would have to do a good amout of trimming.

Look around for a 97 and up explorer with auto - 4hi-4low, the only time i find the auto mode usefull is on snow covered roads. The auto mode will engage the front wheels as needed when the rear slips and i have found that it does not work well in mud,and the auto mode can be shut off on these models with the "brown wire mod"to give you true 2wd.A 4hi will give you better performance off road.

I have the Auto/4hi/4low system and I did the brown wire mod. The thing i like is the 2low that I got from it ~ really nice when crawling down steep mountains in the summer time.

Also, when off road, I leave the switch on 4HI and flip on/off my front axle as i see fit ~ so I have bind free 2WD steering but 4x4 at the touch of a button :D

This truck has the 2wd option along with the 4hi auto and 4low. So what is the advantage since I have the 2wd option?

You can run a locker, you get better gas mileage and a few other things I dont really know of

you may have a prob with lifting cause you have ARC(standered on limited)

no....it lift's it 2in's when you shift in to 4x4 high..then it lift's you another 2in's whe you put it in 4x4low..so in 4x4low you get 4in's of lift..over 2wd(lowest setting)
