Hello -

This is my first post - I'm thinking of starting a fairly large project and want to find out how doable it is.

I would like to put a 5spd transmission into a V8 powered explorer. I don't have the truck yet - I'd be doing the work this summer. I want to build something that retains 4 wheel drive.

Has anyone done this before? I've done some searches and haven't found anything. I'd be looking to take a late model 1998 Explorer with stock V8 and 4R70E and do the swap into that.

I was thinking: the Mustang used the 5.0 and the T5 - can i use a T5? If so, what about mating a T5 to the transfer case? Which transfer case would be best to have? What about gear ratios? Clutch hydrualics... etc.

Also, are there other transmissions worth looking at? From say and F150?

I'm looking for any and all help, part numbers, etc.

Thanks,
Aaron

Swapping a manual transmission could be done by using the pedals and linkages from a 95+ explorer with manual trans. Your main concern isn't going to be putting the 5speed in. It is finding a way to make the EEC-V OBD-II operate without the electronic transmission installed. I believe though they mae chips to delete the 4R70W.

I know this has been taked about before.
Good Luck,
Al

I can reflash your EEC to think that you have a manual transmission, so that wouldn't be a big issue.

I have a local guy I am researching a manual to auto swap, on an 03 mustang cobra. It's actually easier to go to a manual than an auto, go figure!
