This will be rather lengthy so bare with me please. I have a 2005 Explorer v6. A few weeks ago I was traveling home and I hit at deer on the expressway at 75mph. The deer caused $6500 with the initial estimate. After repairs were done and a/c was recharged, the repair shop was detailing the car. They went to check the oil and found water in the engine. It was at this point that they call me and tell me that the water pump was bad. The original estimate had for a new clutch fan so it didnt surprise me when I heard this,. I figured that the shaft to the pump probably was bent. At some point they replaced the water pump. Then I get a call saying that I have a blown head gasket. At this point I was a little baffled since I shut the car off right after the impact. The insurance company even called and wanted to know how long I ran the car. So I stop in and talk to them and say, how can the gasket be blown? I wasnt wanting to point fingers but it appeared as if someone ran the engine without coolant. They told me that it was possible that the gaskets were blown before the accident. I became irritated at this point because I knew they were fine and I even had the oil changed that week before the accident. I had a theory and shared it with them. I thought maybe the impact from the water pump may have cracked the timing cover causing coolant to fill into the engine. They told me that their guys said its the gaskets. So I talk to my State Farm rep and expressed my concerns about the repair. Today I get a call from the repair shop and was told that the timing cover may be cracked and that if it was cracked it could act as if the gaskets were blown. I said, yeah I told you that the other night. I go out to the shop and look at the oil that was taken out. It was full of water! It looked almost like a Guinness beer. They said that the oil was changed and they started it up and it still leaked watyer into the engine. This was while they thought the gaskets were blown. I look at the dipstick from the engine and it looked far worse then a gasket issue. So long story to end, it ended up being the cracked timing cover. Now this is what brings me to my concern... I do not know how much water went into the engine but it seems like it was quite a bit. They drove the vehicle to get the a/c recharged and it had to sit there and idle for a good 20 minutes. So what do you guys think about the chances of this engine being screwed up? I expressed my concerns to the insurance rep about how I wanted it to go to the ford dealership. This didnt happen. The body shop is doing the repair. What really gets me is this... If the water pump was bad, why didnt they see the timing cover was broken at that time?
