Coolant leak

For a couple weeks now I occasionally noticed that my heat would go cold and my temp guage would shoot to hot and back to normal, so I checked the coolant level and it was down to 1/2 full. I was told by my mechanic buddy to replace the Thermostat O-ring, so i'm doing that tomorrow, hopefully fixing my leak. If not i'm replacing the housing itself. Things are so crammed tight right there its hard to pinpoint the leak. But when i rev the engine coolant shoots out from inside the mess there. I really hope its not a bad intake, but thats the worst case scenario.

Sounds like a bad hose somewhere.
