I have a coolant leak that runs down the side of the starter housing. Is there a freeze plug up above the starter that could be leaking. 99XLT 4.0. If so got any idea the cost to repair:(

Replacing a freeze plug is a piece of cake, if that is the problem. What often is NOT a piece of cake, is getting to one! You either have a freeze plug leak or a leak at the head gasket. Try as bext you can to check up to the head gasket level, if you see nothing, it's probably the freeze plug. Figure what you need to remove to get to it. Do that, have a new freeze plug handy... and if that's it you are in luck. Drain the anti freeze, drill a hole in it big enough for a big screwdriver or pry bar, and pull that baby out. CAREFULLY pound in the new one and you are set! <maybe> <g> Good luck.

Thanks for the imfo. I just came in from underneath the truck. Found a leaky freeze plug above the starter. Can't find anymore wet spots anywhere else. Hope that is the problem. Thanks for your help:)

Mitch... it it helps, Freeze plugs are not usually catastpohpic failers. In other words, a leaker will stay a leaker, and increase in leakage. If you cannot get it done this week, next week will probably be ok... that said... to every rule there IS an exception.

Happy exploring...
