Hey everyone. I have been having some cooling issues on my 92 ex for about a month now. If i drive for more than about 10 minutes, the guage will go up to about 3/4's; then if i take my foot off the gas it will slowly go back down to a quarter. I just replaced the thermostat, and I have no idea what could be causing this.

Thanks,
Andy

1) Are you certain you put the T-stat in facing the same way the old one faced?

2) Did you match the temp range of the old T-stat?

Sounds like you have air pockets in your system - try leaving the cap off while at idle and keep topping it off until full.

Yes I put it in the correct way, and I got the correct thermostat

I already did that, but I will give it another try.

Sometimes, with the engine running, it helps to grab the upper radiator hose and squeeze it while you have the cap off. (Burping the radiator). Don't squeeze it till the coolant spills out--just enough to push the air out.

Also, you might have a bad thermostat...if burping doesn't work...
A lot of T-stats might be 190 degree or whatever, but they won't open until 205. That's no good. Or they open at 180. 410Fortune's trick is to buy 3 or so and boil them on your stove in water. See which ones open at the temp you need. Return the bad ones.

Did the symptoms change after you did the work ? Check the water temp in the radiator with a thermometerI used my wife’s baking thermometer that goes to 450(glass mercury one for melting sugar ..etc). . Maybe it's the sending unit.

Always need a way to test the system.

One day when the gauge got nearly to the top and my Check Engine light came on, I shut off the truck and opened the hood. I had been driving it for about 10 minutes, and I put my hand on the engine and it was not even hot. Could It be the sending unit for the gauge working incorrectly? Changing the thermostat didn't help my problems much; it did however stop it from overheating for about a week, then the problem came back.

anyone?

could this be a bad water pump? I have heard some people say that when the water pump is about to go you will hear a clicking sound from under the hood, and I have been hearing this for quite sometime now.

I had the same problems with my 91. Fan clutch was worn out and I replaced with a heavy duty unit which helped a lot but I was still running hotter than I liked on hot days with A/C on. I replaced the water pump and radiator (both original with 148,000 miles) and that took care of the problem! Found a great deal on Ebay for a new lifetime warranty radiator for just a little more than it would cost to rod the old one!

Also, did you put the air breather hole in the thermostat to the top when you installed it? David

ps I guess the KC's sold?

ever flush the system?

I replaced the water pump today and it is running at normal temperature now. Thanks
