sweet! sounds like my dads barn where I did my 5.0L :) its HUGE and a PITA to heat in the middle of winter

Damn I should have shipped you my old tool box! Trust me I had no idea my wife was going to get me that sucker!! in my 2 car garage organization is KEY to being able to do projects, I spend half my time cleaning/organizing during every job, its the only way!

once I get the red truck in the driveway this weekend I will get some pics of my completely re-arranged work space and tools, I have 4 engine blocks I need to recycle LOL oops! I hate getting rid of parts, even the bad ones
can you say pack rat?

I would love to remote turbo my 5.0L LOL but I think I will just go 347 :)

sounds like i hear a couple coffee tables being made or just one kick ass bar

lol that will be no problem, just inform her your uncluttering the garage and re-decorating the house

But how do you get it in there? And what happened to the floor afterwards? XP

Two guys could easily lift a near bare 4.0L block. One person likely could. So you put a small rug under it to protect the floor.

I would presume you would clean the block thoroughly before it gets polished.:D:cool::p:

dude!!! running yet?

Ya that blue sure is a sign. Just hope that it don't mean the "BLUES" is on it's way.

No it's been friken cold here. -40 with the windchill sucks balls. Heater will keep up but I'll be going through a 20 lb propane bottle in 6H. Supposed to warm up this weekend so I'll be out working on it finishing some much needed work.

Then it's all gonna come out and get welded and some parts will be painted.

Still missing a few parts and some I have to fab up yet.

In no way have I given up on this. Here is some more progress. Started to get a few more things installed. Couple more pieces to install, then it can come apart and have the tubes fully welded.

oh man it was 74 here yesterday, I am pulling for you!!

I remember the feeling when I first drove my new 5 speed with a 4.0L
smile on my face for weeks!

then I went 5.0L, smile on my face for years!

Turbo 4.0L you built yourself = *****IN big ol smile!!

fingers crossed!

everything looks awesome man, i love your truck. are you just using the wastegate to control boost? or will you be running some kind of BOV as well?

also, just a suggestion, i would use header wrap on that pipe that goes under the sump so that you dont heat up the sump to much as that MAY lead to sludge. i would also do the downpipe for the same reason, depending on how close it comes to the sump pan.

I see you still hav a cold front on your grille. Where do you live?

Haha Ya i was just thinking I should pull that off. Last time the truck was driven it was -30°C out and it sure as **** helps keeping the engine warm. The air flow through that single core rad is phenomenal. Im up in Canada and it gets a mite cool in the winter time.

I don't plan to put any wrap on the exhaust. I'd be changing the pipes every 2 years if I did.

I may make an aluminum shield I can bolt on and unbolt to change the oil. This should keep the oil pan cool. There is also enough air flow under the truck to keep things cool.

aluminum shield = good idea

header wrap has come a long way though, there are plenty of corrossion resistant wraps out there
I personally like metal heat shields, they do such a good job, and no risk of trapping water and salt on the pipes

I've got to make a shield for the intake and will likely make a cover for the turbine housing while i'm doing sheet metal work. I'll make a cover for the injectors, to clean things up a bit.

I was going to hold the wastegate open fully on initial start up and back it down till I get the 5 PSi boost.

After doing some reading I found that doing this bleeds the exhaust gas and the spool up is alot slower. After getting a good low gauge for my pressure regulator I found that the stock 280 actuator I have starts to move at 7 and is fully open at 15. :curse: I may as well just use a solid rod as it's not going to move at all. I called the local turbo shop to see if they have a 5 psi actuator or know where I can get a used one. rather than spending $120 to get one off Ebay. They were of no help as the guy wanted to know numbers off the turbo to get me the right actuator. He also didn't seem to know much about what I was after. I'm a newbie at the turbo thing but this guy didn't seem to have a clue.

I thought about cutting up the actuator to see if I could cut a coil or put a weaker spring in it. Started to search the net and came across this article.
http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/t126750.html

Exactly what I was looking for.

SO.................

I cut mine apart and trimmed the spring down. It starts to move at about 2.5 PSI and then it's fully open by 7 PSI. I've got a turn buckle on the shaft that I can preload the spring if I need to and can limit the fully open by turning it.
Just a few more tacks, a bit of grinding and paint then it will be done.

I feel better about this setup.

I did have a couple other springs that I tried and they were way too soft. Actuator started to move at 1 PSI and was fully open at 3. The other started to move at about 1.5 but was fully open at 4.5.

Next on the list is to make a heat shield for the turbine housing, and the restricter plate for the oiling system.
