Hello Explorers! I have had a recuring problem with corrosion on my batt posts. No matter how times I clean them it builds up again and I have to end up cleaning them in order to start my car. Why is that? Is there an open cirtuit or short?

We used to get corrosion on the battery posts, to the point I had to clean them off at least every year. I tried cleaning them with Coke, baking powder/water and even used that store bought cleaner stuff. It seemed to always come back.

I then got rid of the standard "wet cell" battery and put in a gel cell battery.
The gel batteries don't "outgas" like normal wet cell (even "sealed" batteries outgas). Also, since our X goes wheeling it ends up at some really odd angles which may have contributed to the corrosion.

I used to run Exide Orbital batteries when Checker/Kragens carried them. I have since switched to optimas. The issue with the optima (why I didn't by them first) was I wanted to buy it from some place that if I had issues while out of town I could still get it replaced. Checkers was all over the south west so I went with their exide first. I got the optima recently from Costco which is also somewhat common out here.

That durn corrosion!

Thanks for the help I've been goin' nuts tryin ta figure this out! I'll keep ya posted.

...The little battery post felt things do help a little too...

...If you do have heavy use of your battery or have something running full time like a bad fuel pump relay, this will also give the outgas Maniak described, shorten the life of your battery, and a common visual result would be corrosion at the terminal post...
