i have found yet another project. a 01 xlt that has a blown trains. its a 4x4 sohc with a automatic (thats all the info i have at the time). i also have a 97 sport that i pulled the motor out for another project that i am working on (more like frustrating myself with) but that trains is good. it had a sohc with (from what i can see) a 4 spd trains and is a 4x4. can i take the 97 trains and put it into the 01, or not?

Unlikely, the 97 trans had an extra speed sensor on some of them. If you knew that the two had the exact same external wiring components, I believe it will work. I learned this from a Ford tech who's wife had a 97 and issues with its trans. He ended up rebuilding it because he couldn't find a match readily.

I have a 97 with the 5r55e tranny and the tranny is shot. The Ford garage told me it is the worst tranny ford ever made and that it's a 97 only which I assume meant it won't fit other vehicles. I can't quite remember what I was told but I think they said the tranny had one extra shift in it.

No, internally it's basically the same as any pre 2002 5R55E. Ford changed something from that first model year to the following. You should rebuild that 97 trans, but you can use any parts from another 5R55E as needed. Meaning it's simple if it's not burned up, but if it is really bad, you can replace parts and clean out the cooler lines to make it right again. A good shop can take care of that.

thanks don. i just went to get the number and call the guy, and he sold the truck already. nuts. oh well, i guess i have a spare trains for evil if it decides to act up.

Where I live that tranny is worth it's weight in gold.

There are two of them at the local salvage yard, both over a hundred thousand and they want a grand for each of them with a 30 day warranty..... Thats why I bought a different rig....

Where are you from? I was just checking out local craigslist and there are a couple with bad trannies for sale. One is a 2002 and they are asking 1500 for it....

i live near winnipeg manitoba canada. for what ever reason, craigslist isn't popular up here.

I'm sure you are a long way from Syracuse NY. I went and looked at this one and it was super clean and nice. He's asking 2000 but he offered it to me for 1500 and I think he'd go lower....
