My 02 has about 92k miles on it. Occassionally when I first start it and put it into drive, it starts to roll back and then goes into drive. It does not completely roll back, but the tires move backward for about half a second and then it goes forward. It has done this three times in the last two months.

Thanks,
Chris

Sounds like a fluid flow problem. How are the other gears? Does it go readily into reverse, or does it also have a delay? How is the fluid level? The #1 reason for a delay in shifting is low fluid level. The second is a partially clogged transmission filter.

Your transmisions' valve body may be plugged up with dirt and clutch facings. How long has it been since you changed transmission fluid? Did you service it recently using the correct fluid and filter?

Look at your dipstick and see what the condition the fluid is in.

Good luck!

The other gears are find and it goes right into reverse. I can't check the fluid because the 02 explorers do not have a dipstick. I am not sure what the fluid levels are and I have not serviced the fluid, since I have had the explorer. Should I try to service the explorer myself or take it to a shop, since it does not have a dipstick.

Thanks
