Okay, so last night I hear a car alarm (horn) going off, and by the time I get outside, it's off, so I wasn't sure if it was my car or what... and no, we don't hear many car alarms in my neighborhood. ;) I go back inside, and around a half hour later, I hear it again! I grab my keys and go outside, and sure enough, it's my Explorer! My neighbor came out at the same time, thinking maybe it was his Sable. Anyhow, I hit the unlock button (I think) and it shuts off. This is about 9:00 at night, and I really don't think anyone was tampering with it. Well, after shutting off the alarm, the courtesy lights and puddle lights were on. My neighbor asks me if those stay on, and I told them they turn off after like 20 seconds or something... then he proceeds to tell me he saw them on the other morning (before I left in the morning...) Now, with us standing there, they don't shut off! They just stayed on! I opened and shut all the doors again, and popped the hatch and glass separate, reshut, and still they all stayed on! I then started the vehicle and let it run for 10 minutes and they stayed on the whole time.... shut the car off, still stayed on. I was going to pull the courtesy light fuse so at least it wouldn't drain my battery overnight, but first went back inside for maybe 20 minutes... well, when I came back outside, the lights were all off, and I didn't hear the alarm go off for the rest of the night? Anyone hear of anything like this???

sounds like a short or perhaps a bad relay.

I went out this morning, lights were off, and it started right up (no battery drain...). I drove to the train station and when I got out and hit the lock, I cheked the puddle lights and courtesy lights and everything shut off as it should when the car was locked. Everything seems fine now, but now I'm afraid it'll be back.... ugh.

I had this same problem with my 03 XLT. The dealer kept the car for about three days and reported back to me that a wire was broken in the flex cable that goes between the left front door and the vehicle body. They repaired the break and all was good. The big problem was finding the broken wire. The left door gets the most use and that was where the wire was broken. My lights would usually shut off after 20min when the battery rundown protection kicks in.

That makes sense... perhaps the lights turned off for that reason, and then this morning when getting out, the wire was 'ok' after getting giggled around going down the road. Hmm, do I want to get endeavorous and look in to it, or wait until it happens again? This hasn't happened before in the 3 months I've had it... at least not that I've noticed. Maybe it's happened quite a bit and just never noticed it if they turned off after 20 minutes due to the rundown protection!

Did you ever notice anything with the horn, maybe as some sort of notification of the rundown protection kicking in, or that it had kicked in, or anything like that? I'll have to read up in my manual on that feature...

I never had a problem with the horn sounding but depending on what wire is broken the alarm may sound if the break is on a sensor feedback wire for the interior lights and door open circuit. If I had of know about the wires at the time I would of wiggled the flex cable and tried to create the problem, and fixed it myself and saved the $250.00 repair bill.

Is the "Door Ajar" light on? All of those problems could be due to the common door ajar sensor problem.

Nope, the door ajar light was not on... haven't had the problem since, been about a week at this point.

did u finally get the problem fixed or not yet
