My '00 XLS 4.0 OHV 110K has been exhibiting the following symptoms recently:
Last couple of months it has idled rough when first started. It would smooth out within a few seconds.
Plugs and wires are recent, tried cleaning maf, iac, seafoam.
A few days ago the problem got much worse and didn't go away even after it warmed up.
I noticed that the temp guage was fluctuating rapidly back and forth between the low and middle side of normal range.
Finally the CEL came on and indicated a misfire on the #3 cylinder.
I popped the hood and noticed that the coolant overflow tank was dry.
The oil looked fine and the coolant in the radiator didn't look contaminated.
I pulled the heads and found a crack between the valves in the #3 combustion chamber.
I ordered some new aftermarket heads from e-bay but haven't recieved them yet. I'll post as soon as everything is installed and the Explorer is back on the road.
I would post some pics but apparently I'm not allowed to post attachments.
Anyway, I just wanted to share this info in case someone is having the same problems.
