was driving home when exiting gthe freeway it suddenly went out. thoought it mught be the fuel pump since i replaced it and didnt clean the tank and ran it on e till it died a couple times after replacement due to no fuel. i did what my mechanic friend said and whacked the duel tank a few times as well as the new starter i put in.
and it sounded like it wanted to start but just wouldnt stay on, so i decided to channg the saprk plugs without knowing the good bad and ugly. i jammed my hands in there i could have moved something around idk, but i connected the wires without knowing which one went where. and now it cranks and super rough shaking. and after a couple tries it clunks out and the dash even goes dark. theres a grinding sound that i think is the starter that continues after every crank. kinda sounsd like there is something stuvk or lodged somewhere and wont let the engine turn over. i hope i make sense .

so i need help on why it died out on me after a super smoth drive.

also why it wont start / whats causing the super rough cranks, and clunk

i was told it my be my flywheele maybe after the whacks i gave the starter

i was tthinking the injectors maybe

Okay so you have a 2000 explorer
It died
You smacked the fuel tank and the starter
Still dead

Starter cranks but engine wont fire
So you haphazardly changed the spark plugs and just re installed the wires possibly on the wrong plugs

Still cranks no start
Makes a terrible grinding noise when cranking the starter
The noise has you thinking maybe a broken flywheel

And now you are thinking of changing the injectors

That is what I gather from your post

First up when it died did it act like it ran out of fuel?
You should have checked for a fuel pump and check fuel pressure

You
Must re insert the plug wires back onto the correct spark plugs

You said you
May have unplugged some wires or put them back on the wrong spots? You can’t do that and expect it to run

Is this explorer a stick or auto?
What engine do you have?
How Many miles on it?

Yes, that helps a lot to have the wires on right..
Change your fuel filter too.

you got it !! well i was told I might have jumped the timing in misconnecting the wires.
it has 220,000 miles 4.0L 4 wheel drive automatic
it did act as it ran out of gas. i recently changed the fur; pump but never cleaned the tank it ran till it died for no fuel. i suspect the gunk clogged the fuel pump filter or the injectors. but all this is gonna wait till i replace the egr valve pressure sensor i broke while doing the spark plugs

4.0 engines jump time when something breaks,
Not from messing with spark plug wires

You can check fuel pressure
New fuel pumps often go bad if they are cheapo pumps

you can hear the fuel pump working. but the day it died out it just died. it may be a faulty fuel pump.
how do i check the fly wheel?
I’m still not sure if the wires are right. Do you have a reference?

check out this thread,

Po
check out this thread,
thank you for b that . And I think I was only wrong with the last three but what are the repercussions of mixed wires ?

Just what you are experiencing. ;) It is only a 6 cylinder having 3 wires hooked up wrong I dont see how it would start.

open the lid of the gas tank and lean your ear against it, let your friend turn on the ignition and you listen to the noise of the gas pump. it should buzz for 15-30 seconds and then turn off. Then check the pressure and the presence of gasoline in the fuel ramp by pressing the nipple at the end of the ramp.

The pcm primes the fuel pump for about 2 seconds with each turn of the key

These ignitions are waste spark which means two cylinders receive soark each time a coil
Fires (3 coils for 6 cylinders) so messing up half the plug wires will still sometimes start the engine
Firing order is critical
For a properly running engine you cannot just put plug wires wherever they reach lol a 4 cycle engine has cycles and the air fuel spark is timed precisely

sometimes 2-3 seconds are not enough to fill the ramp, if the pressure regulator is not working properly, then you should repeat the start 3-5 times and then, if there is no noise from the gas pump, check the electrical opening of the inertial power switch of the gas pump.

I can hear the pump coming on, I unplugged the fuel line gave it a crank and it had pressure. I was gonna remove the fuel injectors but as soon as I pulled the upper intake off I see a thin wire that went under the lower intake and the plastic around the wire was just disintegrated. Idk what it’s for tho?
It connects to the passenger side fuel rail or idk but I can’t get a good diagnosis until I fix that.

Pics? Injector wires run down in there…but so do other things

this is after I tried to tape it since the wire wasn’t ripped just the plastic

Whatever that wire is it seems quite tight. Where is it headed?

I how I got a good angle but it goes under the intake and then idk where else. I put black tape separating the wires since it wasn’t ripped. Put it all back together it still doesn’t start. It’s cranks revs and shuts off. But this time I noticed the theft light is blinking.

So the antitheft light turned off but no start still and here is the wire when all put together
