What is, specifically, you problem with cruise control ?...My CC is out of service, too.

You may find this hard to believe, but after hours of trying to fix this same problem on my 1993 Explorer Limited, I fixed my CC. The CC circuit is somehow tied in to the center brake light above the rear hatch. I replaced this bulb and the bulbs in the overhead map lights (which were also burned out - not sure if these are also part of the CC circuit) and my cruise worked perfectly from then on. This was after replacing everything I could think, including the buttons on the steering wheel. Hard to believe, but true!

wow, you just never know do you?? someone told me that the cc was tied into the brake light system, you know i checked my brake lights but not the middle one. but i will now and let you know.
thanks a lot

Make sure the dump valve is positioned firmly against the brake pedal stem. It simply pulls down from what looks like a threaded retainer, but it does not move in a "screwing" motion. It makes an audible "click" as it moves up or down. This valve is what "dumps" the cruise when you touch the brake. It "dumps" the vacuum that is holding the cruise speed. It is located very near the brake light switch. If it is too high, your cruise will not engage.:us:

my cc hasn't worked in the vehicle for years now. It used to not like to come on at all or take a speed setting now it just plain never works...I never did try to fix it though.

Check your dump valve.:us:

Post #5 says it's near the break pedal stem. So I would assume underneath the break pedal.

where is the dump valve anyway?

Get a flashlite and worm your way under the dash on the driver's side. Follow the brake pedal stem upwards and you'll see it. It is cylindrical in shape, and there is a small switch that should be firmly resting on the pedal stem when the pedal is in the up position. You will also see vacuum hose connected to the back of the dump valve.:us:

thanks a lot i'm going to check that out this am. i looked last night but didn't really know what i was looking for, so didn't find anything. now i know what to look for. fortunately everything else works just fine. i've had a Ford BII for the last 20 yrs. and knew almost everything about it. so now i'm learning all over again. so thanks again teachers.

i must be blind!? i found a switch on brake pedal, but it looks like the brake light switch. it connects right at the end of the push rod that goes through the fire wall to the power unit. i can't seem to find anything else up there??? forgot to tell you my cruise control light doesn't even come on.

I just noticed that you are a Gen II...they may be different than the Gen I's. Sorry if I led you astray. I have no experience with Gen II's. BTW, Gen I's don't have a cruise control light, so there's a difference right there.:us:

well at least i found out i'm not crazy?? at my age its hard to tell??lol

gen 1 = '91-'94
gen 2 = '95-'01

I think ricco is referring to the '96 listed just under your username and forgot that in your 1st post for this thread you are referring to a '94.

I found my dump valve by following the vacuum line that goes from the CC servo under the hood through the firewall.

As noted, there is not CC light to come on.

is there any way to tell if the cruise control is even coming on in the gen 1 since there is no cc light...I'm not certain mine even comes on when I push teh on button.
