ok well as some of you may know i put the 2 12" Crystal's in the ex tonight-specs are dual voice coil @ 2 ohms, 800 watt RMS and 1600 watt peak, blah, blah, blah-anyways I wired everything correctly-i'm positive of it, yet these subs don't hit any harder than my type R's. Am i missing something? the subs are in the reccomended box size, wiring is good, and my amp is pushing 1500+ watts? 1771 to be exact. I was expecting these Crystals to shake the whole neighborhood, after all they are competition subs! I was very dissapointed.....just thought i would vent.

Things that could be wrong:

1. The box size, did you subtract the displacement of the Crystals? The displacement should be around .25 since you said before that the magnets are huge.

2. Wiring, but you said they are correct. Make sure they are wiried correctly again.

My guess is the box size because you said they sound great with one sub.

i have the 2 Crystals in a 3.3 cu foot box-i think thats big enough on the sounddoamin website it says they only require .80-1.00 cu feet-well heres the link:
http://www.sounddomain.com/sku/CRYCMPX212-
i will check all wiring again today when i get home from school. But i'm pretty positive that it's all right.

3.3 cubic feet might be too big. If what Im looking at right now is correct than 2 subs that need 1.00 cu feet x 2 (subs) = 2.00 (total) + .30-.50 (displacment) = 2.50 cubic feet is probally the bigest size box you would need. When you have .80 cubes free air space they will most likely sound not bommy, and they will not POUND like they are suppose to. Try to put sothing in the box that will lower the air space. Like extra wood, and srew the pieces down to make sure that they dont move around, maby add some caulk. Try that and write back

3.3 sounds way too big actually. the 10s i purchased has the ideal space of 0.65 cubic feet. u shouldnt need that much room i think. but even so. i dont think the subs should perform horribly if it had that much space..

what about puting some polly fill in? Put some in test it out , add more or take some out as needed, them glue it to the inside of the box.

...

Doesnt polyfill make the subs think the box is "bigger"...
i might be wrong there but, im pretty sure im not..
so polyfill would being hurting it more.

UPDATE-ok this is what i did-put the 2 Crustals in my sealed box that the Type R's used to be in the box is ~ 2.5 cu feet. The one sealed box has 2 enclosures as opposed to the 3.3 cu foot box that was only one BIG enclosure. Oh ya i checked all wiring too and everything is how it should be. So after having the subs installed in the 2.5 cu box i only notice a lil difference-the subs hit much crisper yet still don't "pound" any harder than my Type R's-i don't get it? It's not like they don't have enough power to operate-i'm running 4 gauge wire throughout-and i can't think of anything else that is wrong. Maybe i just got a bad pair of subs? i doubt it though-they were brand new-I took them out of the box and put 'em right in my car. AHHHH this audio stuff is soooo frustrating!!!!!!

Just because you changed subs and addded power does not guarantee they will be louder.
There are many things to consider like the actual output of the amps, and the efficiency of the subs is a very important factor!!! The power added is NOT proportional to the loudness in decibels. You can add thousands of watts and only gain a few db's

Chris

:( thats why i dont like crystals...............

First try moving the box around... this can sometimes make a huge difference flip the box have it point in different directions ect ect...

secondly make sure they are not outta phase this will cause cancelation.

lastly build a ported box ;]

Gimme all your info.. amp subs DVC 2ohm 4ohm and ill see if thats your problem.

i didn't add any power-i was using the same amp i used with Type R's-Rockford Fosgate 1500.1(actual output 1735 watts) All i wanted was suggestions as to why the Crystals (800 rms, 1600 peak, not to mention a 43 lb magnet) weren't hitting any harder than the Type R's? Are they just not that good of a sub?

Then it would most likely be related to the Crystal's efficiency and their ability to use the power supplied and create sound pressure. Xmax is another big factor. Also I think Rockford supplies their max power ratings at 14.4 volts, which your car does Not supply. The difference at 12 volts is a huge difference, and cars dont always supply a constant 12 volts either, often only 11.X or so. That is why me and some buddies are going to get a 16 volt power system for our SPL Blazer.

Chris

actually most cars will run @ 14volts, till you draw more than the alternator can supply. Thats when the battery takes over at 12 volts

-Whats the efficiency ratin on those subs?(crystals)

sure sounds like those subs aren't real efficient.

I only have a CMP10 powered by a diamond 1200.1 and it is more than enough for me. But then again I was going for sound quality.

Just by changing the subs and not going with more power you are not goin to get a lot louder sound. Try using a ported bod, the sealed box is going to be great for sounds quality but not as good for loudness as a ported box.

I think the problem that you are going to find is the difference in efficency is what is causing the lacklusture performance. Remember, every 3db of change in efficency is 200% change in audible output. In other words if I have a 200 watt sub thats 93db eff. and a 400 watt sub that is 90db eff the 400 watter is gonna sound a helluva lot like the 200 watter.

I'm not a big fan of crystals... I would perfer to hear you running some W7s... but then again, the W7s are expensive as ***** and aren't as much of as spl sub. I would look into getting a more effcient sub next time. I dunno, mabey look at eclipse Ti line or some such?

I dont think the box is your problem, and getting different crystals probably wont help either.

Good luck and keep me updated

Yeah I have a set of those Titaniums. They are for sale if the price is right. Let me know if anyones interested.
They are brand new, and still in boxes/wrapping from the factory.

Alright-well for now i am done with Crystal altogether-you guys were right the efficiency wasn't all that good-89.4 db's yet, the Alpines were 87.0, well anyways besides the efficiency factor i did everything i could to get these subs to bang-i had no sucess. so i just wanted to tell everyone that Crystal sucks:thumbdwn: and i am through! I put my Type R's back in yesterday-i missed 'em!...lol....:D
