I have just recently started to make my own custom intake that will suck air from underneath the truck. It is a 93 explorer by the way. I would like to know how do you remove the battery tray. Is it welded on? Also the more important question: what is that hose that connects to the side of the stock air tube. It is the larger black hose not the vacume lines. I think it goes to the oil resevaur. Does the pressure form the intake push oil throughout the lines? Can I just get rid of this tube?

The tube you are talking about it for the oil blow off. Normally any "extra" oil is blown up through there and burnt in the engine. I do believe you can pick up mini-filters for those.

Do you offroad lots? cause if it sucks air from underneath that could be really bad.

Let me know how this works and how you did it when your finished. Thanks.

Sounds good, lets see some pics of your bulid.

half done. I just got a digital camara and I am not sure how to post pics. How do you take the battery tray off? Is it welded on????????

What do you guys use as a gasket for custom intakes.

Hows the build going, did you get any pics yet.

I went to autozone and got a gasket kit. I just traced my old gasket and cut it out. As for the pics if someone shows me how I can post them I already got them on my digital camara!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok I have all of the parts that I need to install the intake:

10' of 2" pvc pipe - $8
5' of 3" pvc pipe - $9
4 90 degree L's - 80 cents a peice - $3.20
3 rubber 3"-2" reducer - $7 a peice (more that I thought) - $21
1 pvc (3 peice) shower drain - $12
1 filter (k&n is the best you can get) - $21
1 2" rubber coupler - $2
---------------------------------------------------------------
GRAND TOTAL: $76.20 (not bad since they don't make them for behind the bumper!!!!!!)

It is very hard to know what you need to get until you have some of the peices on the engine. I think I lost count of how many times I ran back and forth to home depot. (12 times!!!!)

(Assuming that you took out the stock air box and the pipe that goes into the engine and under the battery.)
PROCEDURE: Take the rubber coupler and put it on the intake part of the engine. Next take one of the 90 degree L's and put it on the other end of the coupler. Tighten the hose clamps on both sides. Next cut a peice of the 2" pipe so that it will stop at about where the battery tray is. Next put another 90 degree L and put it on the end of the pipe so that it is faceing the grill. Then cut some more 2" pipe so that it will stop so that you can make it go in front of the battery. (This is the hardest part) Get a metal cutting wheel and cut a hole in the front part of the battery tray so the pipe will fit in it. Next put another 90 degree L on the end of the pipe and make the pipe pass through the battery tray. Then cut some more 2" pipe and make it so when you put the filter on you can't see in hanging down from the bottom. Then take your MAF thing and figure out where you want to put it so the cord can still plug in. Go and cut the shower drain so that it will fit your MAF. Bolt the shower drain to the MAF. Next put a 3"-2" reducer on the metal flange of the MAF. Then cut where you can fit it before the pipe goes down. I went to autozone and got a heater core pipe fitting. (you can get any fitting so that it will fit your oil overflow tube. Get a hole bit (I borrowed it from a friend) and cut a hole in the pvc pipe screw the fitting in and attach the hose. This part is optional!!!!! I made it so that the pipe that came from the header will tie into the setup. You can just put a small filter on it and call it a day. I got a 2" T and got some spa drain tube any flex tube will work just make sure that is 2" flex pipe. Smash the pipe into the T and epoxy it to the T fitting. Next figure out where it should go and cut the pipe. Put the other end of the flex pipe on the header and then take it all apart again and paint and paint it any color you want and get some pvc glue and glue all the peices together and you are done!!!!!!!

I didn't list the price of the hole saw and the paint and the pvc glue because that is all the stuff I had allready.

Go out and do this is will add more horsepower and looks and sounds great. Most of all you have major bragging rights that you made this yourself!!! Have fun!!
