I was looking at a bunch the intake tubes on this site, and I found a bunch of homemade ones that I liked. I was thinking, that instead of using a PVC pipe, could I get an exhaust shop to bend a pipe for me? I think this would give a better appearance, but would this be a good idea? I will be putting this on a '91 XLT. Also, does the intake tube affect the sound at all? When I cut my airbox, I really liked the sound, so I am wondering if a better tube would help out the sound.

With mine I just got a straight piece of 3" aluminized, and then a 90 degree piece or Ubend piece, then just cut the 90 or ubend piece so that it'll fit just like your stock tube. But will be bigger and suck more in.

Atleast I think I used 3".

You have to have a welder by the way to weld the pieces together. Or have a shop weld it together for like a few bucks, I would imagine.

got my parts from a speed shop. The only problem that you might run into is that you really need a 3in body lift to fit the new intake.

the problem you run into with th exhaust shop idea is the fact that you'd have a metal peice of pipe as induction. Where you want to keep the air going into your block as cool as possible. the exhaust pipe is metal so therefore would get hot as the engine gets hot thus heating up the air going thought it...i'd go pvc because i used hotwater pvc and then used hi temp paint so its insulated pretty good. not saying the air in my intake isn't gonna warm up...but it has a more likely chance of stay cooler longer as opposed to a peice of metal.

Elite is right, my metal intake tube gets really hot. However, the airflow into my motor is so fast that above 10-15 mph it doesn't matter because the air doesn't have enough time to heat up due to the pipe's heat.

A metal intake tube that is ceramic coated will look and function well ;) A coating shop would probably charge $75 or so to coat a custom tube.

Being new here, i was curious if some of you could post some pics of your custom intakes. Not many modded x's down here so I'm always looking for ideas. I plan on a kkm around mid january but i would like to get it some fresh, colder air, and some of your ideas sound pretty damn good. Thanks

Just went and took a pic of my intake, my friend loves to paint my stuff red for some reason.

what did you end up making that out of ?

looks great!!!!!!!!

Believe it was 3" Mild Steel.

For the first gen Xers, if you didn't know, Warren Kurtz of KKM is designing a true cold air tube for us that will fit the stock tube. Made of siliconized rubber with no ripples or reduction to slow air down. Should be ready by end of January so watch the threads!!
