well.......as I am trying to diagnose this annoying ticking problem emanating from my engine, I decide to change the thermostat. So, I pull off the housing and notice something particularly queer, it seems that the previous owner felt that if he pulled out the thermostat, cut it in half and reinstall, thereby bypassing the thermostat. Why in the world would someone do this?

Better cooling. Coolant flows as fast as the water pump can pump it. When I had my Camaro, I removed the T-stat, and it worked great, but it took forever to get to operating temperature. Good thing it was a summer car only. Or it could be that it was sticking, and instead of replacing it, bypassed it.

Better cooling maybe, but not great for the motor and not efficient. I'm not sure why they would cut it in half though. I'm very surprised it did not leak like that.

FWIW, thermostats are good because they ensure the engine gets to operating temperature quickly which is good for fuel economy. That and when running no thermostat you could eventually get problems boiling over. Simply put the cooling system is not designed to work that way.

What T-stat (brand, temperature, reliability) do you suggest for my recent bought Expl 4.0 OHV, i run it in tropical country with a temperature range between 15ºC-32ºC.(dont know Farenheit equivalent)...is the 160º Tstat ok? Thank you.
