What tool(s) have you used to cut open a used oil filter?

Thanks ....

I usually use a hacksaw. I cut it at the base of the filter. Any filings from the case are easily distinguishable on the filter element.

i use one like 90ranajo showed. its actually designed to cut aircraft filters, (i work at an aircraft maitnence hangar) but it works for car filters too. in addition to the cutter it came with a cup that you set it in and is held in the cup by pointy bolts that go into the side of the filter (like a christmas tree stand.) it has a thing on the bottom of the cup to put it in a vice. then you use the cutter on top.

i doubt you really need the cup thing if you have a big vice.
