So I was looking at the 1354 manual that I had in my old explorer, the 96 EB with the 4.0 OHV, and I was going to swap it in to my current truck, the 2000, but I noticed that the transfercase has a u-joint front output, and the driveshaft on the truck looks to be the CV style one that I THOUGHT was only on the 5.0 AWD..

Whats the deal guys? Am I going to have to get a driveshaft from a certain year truck to get my 1354 in?

So more research leads me to understand that 95 and 96 were the only years with a decent front shaft, with a u joint. I guess i'm going to have to see about getting my old, or an equvalent, driveshaft from a yard. Until then I'll just leave the front driveshaft out.

Stupid CV joint driveshaft...

Seems like a pretty decent design to me... 171k and still ticking (knocking on wood).

Yes, the stock front shaft on a 97-01 is a CV front output from the t-case. IIRC, you can use a double-cardan front shaft from a first-gen (V-8?) when you swap in the case.

I should be able to get the front driveshaft back from my old truck ( 96 4.0) from the yard i sold it to a year ago. I ended up with the same transfercase from it ;)

Only issue is getting the driveshaft to bolt on to the transfercase. The case didnt come with the two little 'caps' to bolt the U-joint from the driveshaft on to the transfercase flange. I can only hope that they are still stuck on the driveshaft, or maybe someone has some they could spare?

Check the For Sale forum... the guy parting out the Explorers should be able to get 'em for ya'. ?)
