I need some quick help here please as I have to disconnect the battery every time I leave the truck.
When I shut off the truck, '98 Explorer XLT the daytime running lights stay on, but they stay on with the high beams on. The high beam light on the dash is also illuminated. If I play with the signal stalk by putting it to brights then back to normal, eventually the lights go back to the regular lights but you can still see the high beam light slightly illuminated.
This happened first, about a month ago when I had some kind of, still unknown liquid, escape from the truck on the highway. I disconnected the battery for a couple hours and when I hooked it back up, the lights were off. I had no problem since, until I had the oil changed on Friday. That is when this started happening again. But, now.. even with having the battery disconnected over night, the lights still stay on.
Could I start with something simple like disconnecting the DRL themselves or what can I do here besides pay $$$$$$$$ to a vulture?
Please help

Thanks

Paul

simpliest way to quickly solve the problem without disconnecting your battery every time is to disconnect the drl module. Not sure of 98, but I have the problem on 96 (sunday in fact). The module is under the driver side front bumper area. Unplug the cable and your done (wrap the end to protect it). The module is "proprietary" ... only ford you say and in canada eh, its $170. If you can find a junk yard, they go for $50-$60. Two screws hold it to the frame.

Thanks. Hope that works. I will go try to locate the module now.

This may be a longshot and you may have already checked this before...but on some models, there is a slider switch on the bottom of the rear view mirror. That sets the duration of how long the lights stay on (interior, headlamps and dash lights) Upon leaving your vehicle and locking the truck, the timer starts counting and eventually turns all the lights off.

If moved all the way to the left, all the lights turn off almost instantly, if moved all the way to the right, it may take up to 3 minutes or so for the lights to go off

Again, I may be looking at the wrong solution but I figured it may be worth a shot before you disconnect your drl module

It was the module. Disconnected it and the problem has gone away. By habit, I always turn the full headlight system on when I get in the truck so I won't miss them anyway.
Now.. I need to find out why my drivers door won't open from the inside. :(

Thanks again for the help

.. I need to find out why my drivers door won't open from the inside.

If you feel the linkage "moving" when you pull on the handle but the lock won't disengage, it may be as simple as one of the "clips" broke off or the link may have dislodged from the clip or both

yellow and green are the clips (generic pic / not explorer)

DRL........now door ....

Your inside door handle may have also done what mine, on my '94, done a while back, the cogs on the back of mine snapped off because the RCL piston malfunctioned (broken inside) Took handle off, put different one on, disconnected RCL piston & disposed of it, now it opens fine. Just locks with key only now on left side. :) simple repair....

The outside handle has been floppy since we got the truck but still worked. The inside handle had a restriction when pulling it for about four months. I would have to pull it two or three times before it would open the door. Then, the other day.. it just stopped doing anything and I have to open it from the outside, even with the lock off.
Is this similar to what is being mentioned in the above suggestions?

DRL will not go off

No, my outside or inside handle was never floppy. I just went to do the remote control unlock and it would seize up on the 1 door but work with all the rest of them, then finally that door would not unlock at all is what happened to my '94. I never had any floppy handle problem. :)
