D35 4.88's?

I frequent another site where a few guys have said that 4.88's aren't available for the ttb d35. Is this true?

ttb is reverse rotation. I haven't seen 4.88's for it. I have 4.88 in the IFS D35....its a standard rot pig.
 












So if 4.88's aren't available what do most of the guys running 35's use for gears?
 






4.56 or 5.13

I have 4.88 with 35" tires, and I think 5.13's would have been still ok on the road...but I opted for a 4.3:1 Atlas for low gearing. With the stock tcase, I would opt for 5.13 if you can deal with 10MPG....
 






Right now in my Ranger I've been making due for two years with my 33's and 3.27's (no rocks where I live) so I will probably go with 4.56 since that will be a vast improvement over my current situation. I don't have any immediate plans on going to 35's I just don't want to outgrow my gearset as soon as I have them installed. ;) Thanks for the replies.

A 4.56 ring and pinion set has 41 teeth on the ring gear, and 9 on the pinion gear. A 5.13 ring and pinoin has 41 teeth on the ring gear, and 8 on the pinion.

The 4.88 set has 44 teeth on the ring gear, and 9 on the pinion. That litterally means the 4.88 set is the largest of the 3... (making 5.13 physically the smallest set of the bunch. )

I think it has nothing to do with the strength of the gear (or the size of it for that matter), but more-so the strength of the housing. Keep in mind, our dana 35s are aluminum... really low gears reach temps over 800*, the larger the hotter. since 4.88 is so much larger, i would imagin this might be the case. 4.88 is avalible for just about every other dana 35 also, so the diameter of the ring gear really isnt the issue. Also, Ford uses thick gears, so size doesn't matter, they can do anything they want with 'thick' gears. Likewise, this makes up for a lot of strength in the gear.

Aww man, you will be fine. I'm running 4.56 on 32"s right now, and its WAY overkill. Actually its perfect for me right now, because my motor is nearin 200k and its tired as crap... 3k RPMS at 65~70 mph, seems to depend on how long im driving and what the tempature is at. 12~14 mpg hwy, 16~19 mpg city...

Expect something like what i got with 33"s. With 35"s it will be almost exactly how your truck was with 3.27s and 29" tires.

5.13's work GREAT with 35's. 4.56's don't cut it. simple as that. i went with 4.56's and 35's first. one time offroad and i knew i made a huge mistake. these motors don't have the power to make up for improper gearing. gear low :thumbsup:

my gas mileage isn't great but its still better than 10mpg. but with a manual u do run a little lower rpms over all. either way unless u have a v8 or the sohc 4.56's and 35's is not a good combo imo

Thanks for the input. I tried to look at your cardomain site but the link wouldn't work for me. What I was trying to figure out is what kind of wheeling do you do. I'm just worried that 5.13's will kill me if I don't go to 35's. Is your rig trailered or do you drive it to bag it. Mine is always driven and I have a 5-speed and its a '92 Explorer (not sure if it is a sohc?) I'm not trying to argue with you I just want to know where you are coming from. Thanks again.
 






I have had 5:13's with 35' tires for about four years now and it was my best modification to date. On the freeway, its only good for about 75mph, but in the dirt the throttle control is great.
My Explorer is used for almost exclusively for wheelin' and is a extra vehicle, so I don't have to drive it everyday.

not sure y the cardomain didn't work, i jus tried it and it worked for me. my truck is not trailored. its my daily driver and my only means of transportation. yes 5.13's will be too much if u don't go with 35's u have the v6 ohv so 4.56's would be good with 33's and 5.13's and 35's would be even better. yer going to need the low gearing to keep that clutch alive .u have the manual tranny so rpm's won't be that high even at highway speeds. even at 75 i'm under 3000 rpms. my offroading involves anything from simple offroading trail type stuff to serious mud and rocks. in other words it handles what i throw at it and has the power to keep on moving.
