alright guys the factory intake placement strikes again:splat:.went through some water about 2 and a half feet deep fast enough to make a bow wave that covered that awesome cold air duct and take in a gallon or so.#6 piston wedged against the counterweight and all the other rods bent to some degree:dead:.i've been through deeper water but i guess fate cospired on this one.ohh well now i need to make a better air duct.who all out there with a first or second gen ranger or first gen X have built some thing to the cowl or a cool snorkle.is any thing available after market or been made to fit off a yota or something?

search snorkel, you'll find a couple different builds.

so its time for rebuild, the rods on 86-90 and 91-92 2.9l's have different journal sizes and so does the crank.does anyone know if i can put an early rotating assembly in my later block?or should i use the old style short block in my truck?thanks

i agree, carnage pics are nice, but you won't get pics unless you want to buy me a camera and the other crap that goes with it.:D

I have a snorkel setup to the top of the hood. I also heard about one that uses the holes up by where the wipers are to take in air.

picture!

well this newb finally found out how easy it is to post pics!i'll have to show off my bumpers, etc. now

i'm not sure but i think compression is a little low in some of the cylinders!
maybe its for the best? i'm neck deep in a 4.0l swap now:salute:

i think thats what i'll run.then cut out a removable panel in the top of the cowl so i can bolt on a taller arb style snorkel for when i'm really being stupid with my truck!

i hydrolocked last week, was in 4WD Low 2nd gear..entered a puddle going too quickly ( 2 feet deep puddle lol) and the water domed infront of my hood for about 20 feet, then i stalled, starter would click. towed it out, pulled intake off, gallons came out of the Plenum, pulled plugs, turned it over, watched water spew everywhere for a minute, and my friend told me it was still coming out for the next minute and a half (2 minutes total of turning it over with spark plugs out) sprayed electrical cleaner in each hole, dried spark plugs off, put em back in, kept intake hose off, sprayed brake cleaner into the butterfly and watched flames come out as it turned over and smoked for 10 minutes. Still runs the same. LUCKY ME..

Seeing this definitely has put the snorkle on the top of my mod list. Unbelievable that water not even over the wheels can do that!

problem solved!

this should do the trick.i used the intake tube from a 2.9l and mocked up the ducts out of cardboard before borrowing some sheetmetal from a 91 explorer door to weld up the ducts.
