do i really need a case spreader to install remove the carrier on the dana 44? if i do where can i get one, how much.

is this something a novice with a lot of patience and an eye for perfection should try or should i just send it to a shop to install new gears?

thanks guys

make it

You may not need a spreader- I havent done many gear set ups - only three, and I used a spreader once on a Dana 44 in the rear of a Jeep. I made one out of some angle iron, and a bottle jack. Remember your only spreading the housing maybe 10 thou. Keep an eye on your dial.

I made mine out of some scrap angle iron I drilled to bolt to the sdies of the case and the angle was long on each side. I cut a piece to go across the top, and put the jack between the lower legs and gave it a pump.

I would try without the spreader and then if you find you need it-make it.

good luck

hey thanks! you wouldnt happen to have a pic of the one you made would you? thanks again!

You don't need a spreader for just a couple of jobs, besides it doesnt justify the cost. What you can do is get a box end wrench that fits on the bolts on the carrier holding the ring gear on. Rotate the pinion untill the wrench comes in contact with the housing then rotate the pinion more. It will pry itself out but be careful to not let it fall to the ground. You can use a pry bar carefully as well. A dead blow hammer (rubber) would be useful in installing and removing as well. Good luck.
