Daytime Running Lights

So you say that you will drive on the OTHER side of the road if you don't see the other car coming?
I did drive in AZ for one year and I was able to avoid driving on the opposite side.
And yes, I did turn on my lighs during sandstorms, rains and nights, no need for government to tell me to keep them on all the time so I don't forget.
In my view, DRL it is just politicians telling us that we are so stupid, that we need to drive with lights on all the time.

What in the hell are you drinking/smoking. I NEVER said a damn thing about driving on the other sidd of the road.

Please tell me that you are just trolling or screwing with these guys SoNic67....

Not quite but close... highs are used to reduce the wear and tear on the bulbs (at least in 96 and some others)... you know how concerned our government is about pinching our pennies... :-)

My DRL's only come on with main beam. Is there a way i can change it by having them come on with ignition or with sidelights only?

IN Canada a firm named Insight electronics located in Nelson B.C supply many kits to manafacturers for the installation of Daytime running lamps and many of the mfg. have kits that will operate the DRL. suggest the low beam operating at half brillance is the better choice because the angle of light from low beam is aimed at a lower angle and be better accepted by oncoming drivers

the local dealers may be able to programme you vehicle or supply a kit to operate the D.R.L. as you want. good luck

Hoof.. the lights in the bumpers are not Fog Lights, they're Spot Lights, come on with High Beam only.

We don't have DayTime Running Lights in the UK.

thanks for your help i'll give it a go sometime. I just don't get the idea of main beam plus DRL. Seems a bit overkill to me. I don't think they are fogs as you would not have the main beam, fog combo

IN canada we use the half brillance low beam system for D.R..L in many cases to avoid installing additional lamps

the system seems to do a great job and when you select regular beams there is an overide in the lighting system as the low beam on D.R.L. mode operates at a lower voltage and in regular operation regular voltage is applied
Most automotive suppliers can supply the kits, which come with easy installation instructions

but if you connect ones to separate switch, they will become FOG lights, or not?

Fog lights are for foggy conditions. Spot lights light up the road at a farther distance. Two entirely different beams.

The definition in Canada and In BC are that any additional driving lamps must be used only with high beam. and cannot be operated with low beam,

In B.C fog lamps may be used instead of low beam when the weather is foggy or rainy
but the park lamps tail lamps and marker lamps must be lit when using either low beam or the fog lamps, fines can be issued for $ 109.00 for improper use of fog lamps

Okay Guys N Gals....

I just came across this post while searching for an answer to another problem I have but felt the need to chime in here (even if it's three years later).

I bought my 2000 brand new off the lot and my DRL's seem to operate in a different manner than everyone's machine on here. My DRL's come on automatically when the ignition is turned on, there is no half light to them at all (the exact same bulb/intensity as the low beams), only the low beams come on as DRL's (no marker lights, no tail lights, no fog lights) if the headlight switch in not activated, once the headlight switch is activated, all other marker lights and fog/spot lights come on as well (if the switch is in the on position) as expected AND once the High Beam switch is tripped, the fog/spot lights go out. It's been this way from the factory and nothing has been altered.

Anyway, just wanted to chime in here and give everyone something else to chew on....

Cheers

McMuddy from BC (Canada for those of you who are Geographically challenged)

got a question to you all, can we create a light dictionary, here is a second gen explorer, how do you call highlighted lights?

Those are called FOG lights by Ford manual. And theoretically are not supposed to be used during night time, unless if fog outside.
Of course everyone uses them, regardless what law says. A non-enforced law is... not a law.
See the US immigration laws.

DRL lights are using the main beams, but with a voltage dropping resistor, to reduce the brightness (and protect the bulbs).

I at least call those the fog lights.

I at least call those the fog lights.

They are fog lights.

On my car they come on with the high beam and there's no switch to turn them off.
They're disconnected now, I use the power from them to drive the light bar.
They were useless.

I did the slight mod to have mine on with both high beams and low beams, because I currently have no aftermarket lights on my truck.

I would have done that but they're useless lights so I didn't bother.

I find that HIDs cut through fog pretty good.

I find that they're brighter than my low beams (OEM lens.. slightly yellowing) in close range (as most of my driving is city/busy highway) and is the light output is slightly wider. Plus I like the look.

You've got the round lights, mine are rectangular with a H1 globe.
