Here's my story, walked into a dealership the other day to purchase a new Explorer, and the dealership tried to charge me $800 for window tint, nitrogen filled tires, and some kind of paint protector. I asked him directly if this was an option I can decline, and he said NO. So I walked out. My question is are these B.S. charges or legit? Other then price for vehicle, tax, title and doc fee what other fees did you pay?

BS charges, you don't need any of those (may be tint, but we only need front 2 windows so you should pay more than $100)

RUN, don't walk to another dealer. Salesman was BSing you.
Where are you at? Maybe someone can recommend a dealer in your area.

The dealership can charge you whatever the market bears. Do you have to pay it? No! You did the right thing. Walk away. Take your business to another deserving location. It's a BIG market out there.

Yep BS...go somewhere else.

Well, they are legit - if you choose to accept their offer to sell.

But they are total BS dealer add ons to increase their profit on the sale.

Run away from idiot dealers like this. But don't be surprised if you have to pay MSRP at even a reputable dealer for a vehicle in short supply.

Just curious. Other than going by what he said was done, was there any way you could confirm these items he was charging for? I'm not positive, but I believe around here that if the tires contain nitrogen, the valve cap is yellow. My dealership didn't even charge me the $1450 delivery fee! You did the right thing.

I used to work at a dealership and was the guy that installed those packages. They will try and tell you that since its already installed they have to charge you. Which is partially true. On the other hand, they charge you the $800 for something that actually costs about 50 AFTER labor. Its a ploy by the dealership to get more wiggle room to deal. And don't believe it when they say the tires have nitro unless you actually see it.

Was there an accessory ad on itemized list attached to the vehicle??? I work at my local Ford dealer in accessory sales. The dealer is suppose to disclose any added accessory on what it is along with the cost. If it wasn't added, and they're trying to say that you have to add it on, that's totally bogus. They can't upsell anything without your consent.

Every vehicle in our showroom, I showcase them with whatever accessory I decide to put on. Wether it's clearshield, rustproofing, paint protection, vent shades, wheels, etc., I have to put a sticker next to the factory invoice stating what I put on it.

Go to truecar.com and get a price report. Then request a brochure from ford selecting email and mail with 0-30 days. Wait a few days and you'll get an email with a coupon for another $750 off.

I'm a huge fan of truecar.com after this last experience. The other option, join one of these clubs that will get you x-plan pricing and go that route.

Enjoy

Thanks for all the replies, sounds like it was definitely BS charges. I am eligible for x-plan pricing as a result of my employer, and just yesterday I received the brochure coupon for $750. Is that coupon a manufacturer rebate or does the dealership take the hit and make that much less on the sale? Just trying to prepare myself for whatever other BS they try to pull.

Ford takes the hit for all coupons, incentives, etc. not the dealer. And your locked in once you order.
Sounds like your at the same dealer. WOW! I hope not.

Thanks for the info on the $750 brochure coupon. I'm definitely not working with the same dealer, but I've already had two extremely negative experiences with local Ford dealers so I've just come to expect an unpleasant experience. So thanks for all the replies. Is there anybody in Arizona who can recommend a good dealer/salesman that they have worked with?

I ordered my 2011 Limited through Power Ford of North Scottsdale. They were willing to negotiate (including with add ons). I tried three other dealers and they would only come down a bit off MSRP and wouldn't process a vehicle without add ons. If you want the name/email of the person that I used, let me know and I can send you a PM.

Yea, got charged $200.00 for tinted windows and pin striping.
I figured that I was going to tint the windows anyways.

My wife and I like the pinstriping. White w/ gold striping.

The X-Plan pricing is compatible with the $750 brochure discount. I used it.

Print out your X-Plan certificate and take it to the dealer. Some won't like it if they have a short supply vehicle like the Explorer, but if you are ordering one, it is not much of an issue for them. They get the vehicle in and you take it. No floor plan expenses, etc.

Call FORD customer relations and complain about the dealer and tell them the GMC Acadia looks better every day as thay don't force you to buy unwanted add ons. You did the right thing walking out of the dealship. Bozo's like that give all car dealers a bad name. Its one thing to ask if you want a dealer installed option instead having it jammed up your a**.

I am not defending idiot dealers. I think the practice of adding on mandatory or unwanted "accessories" is stupid. But remember, each dealer is an independent business and the manufacturer cannot dictate pricing.

There was an episode of Top Gear on the other day where they said they had to pay $10,000 over MSRP for a Challenger when they wanted one instantaneously. Stupid practice by the dealer? Yep. But that is the dealer's choice.

Easiest way to react is to walk away, and be patient when buying a high demand vehicle and look around for a reasonable deal.

Agreed walk away look for another dealer!
I do remember back in the mid 90's I purchased a new Mrecury Cougar and Mercury/Ford did pull the franchise from the dealer after recieving too many complaints about their selling pratices and service issues. Luckly the car I purchased was being driven off the delevery truck and they did not have time to do the dealer addons. However the dealer did try to sell me a non Ford Service policy that cost about the same as Ford's ESP but required numerious phone calls for the ok to proceed for service, needless to say I demanded Ford's ESP warranty. About a year later I recieved a letter from Ford telling me and all owners that we should take our vehicles to a nearby Ford dealer for any services needed, not back to the dealership where I bought it at. I do believe Ford does listen to its customers as the dealers are selling not only a product but also Ford's reputation and not the dealers silly add on products, and usually there is a GM or Toyota deal nearby ready for your business.
