I'm interested in debadging my exploder. If anyone else out there has had
experience with taking off the Explorer and Ford logo off the rear tailgate,
i'm interested in how it was done. I'm not sure if their glued or if there are
holes in the tailgate where they pop in. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I seem to remember reading that if you remove them, there will be holes left over.

peace
Mike

I removed all on my 99 and there were no holes.

A heat gun and gentile pressure removes them easily. I used acetone to remove any glue reminanys. Looks much better w.o the badges.

Good luck

aldive - on the earlier year explorers the badges were attached using small pins that went into the body panel. It has sense been changed. And for ones that do not have pins in them I prefer the fishing line approach.

massive bass - you most likely have pins going into the body. If you removed the badging you will probably end up with about 2 holes for each badge.

:hammer: heat gun huh, well i'm going out to the garage right now, Thanks alot.

There's a thread in modified explorers about this with some real good advice.:D

Everyone is so quick on the replys i didnt catch the part about the holes, i'm guess i'll be debating on holes vs. badges.

with holes you run the risk of moisture getting inside the panels and possibly doing damage. Perhaps you could find some cool looking Ford badges to go where the stock badges are though.

New badges

ok89 That is a great idea, now i got to find some good lookin badges:cool:

yah, youre definitely gonna have the holes. and if you decide to use a heat gun, be careful, if you dont watch it, youre gonna bubble your paint (i used a hair dryer.) also, acetone, via general concensus, is a lil harsh to use on your truck, when i did mine (and other people did theirs) i used mineral spirits to get the goop off the truck.

also, im with ok89 on the fishing line idea - thats what i did. heat up the badges a lil with a hair dryer, get some fishing line behind the badge, slide it along the door so it scrapes the badge off. then use some mineral spirits to clean it up all neat and nice. dont forget to put some wax on the area too.

Badges, we don't need no stinking badges.:D
Sorry I coul not help myself.

i took all mine off several months ago with the fishing line/heat gun method. works great. take your time. i dont know about the early body style, but on my 96 the FORD oval badge has holes, the others dont.

What are the kinds of things you guys put over the holes or did you fill them? On my 93 XLT I have holes but I dont want to have to weld them shutt then finish them. I was thinking using bondo but it my crack because of the opening and closing of the gate.

the bondo will crack if you open your gate or not. bondo will NOT work in filling in an openening. it really needs to be welded. if you must fill it in without welding, then check out this redneck fix. take a dime, nickel, quarter, or a small metal disc larger than the hole. JB Weld it on to the back side of the panel. when that is cured, fill the hole in with JB Weld and sand(as you would bondo). this will work, i have a friend who did this on a car 5 years ago and painted over and it still looks good. but, i would weld it if at all possible.

On my 94 there were holes. I like showing people that I drive a Ford Explorer, so I just moved them around to were I liked them. Since I have the rear spare you couldn't see the one, but now you can.
By the way I welded mine shut since I was repainting anyway.

Dammit. So that means there are holes on mine too huh.... ****.

giant32oz: I saw that emblem too.... it's SO tempting isn't it??

i shaved my logos

I did mine simply because one day, the FORD logo was looking loose, so I pulled it off and then did the same with the Explorer logo. I sanded it down because nothing I could find would get the glue and dirt off there. Then I have an ample of supply of spray paint that matches my exterior.... I painted and lightly sanded and used a Turtle Wax rubbing compound. The color is not quite right in some kinds of light, but I plan a major repaint within a few months.
By the way, I used the Ford logo to mount on the grille that had been installed.
