Ok, i know this has been posted about before, in fact, i think that i may have posted on this before. but i searched around, and have come up with nothing.

I have some money saved, and i have three options that i want to do to the Explorer. I can only do one of these options, so basically i have to pick one.

Option #1: Paint the Explorer the new color "True Blue"

Option #2: Put in an E-303 cam, and all other stuff

Option #3: Change the Explorer from Auto to Manual.

The Explorer needs paint, but not to the extent that it couldn't go another year.

We all know the cam is where the explorer is lacking, and this would be a great performance mod.

I love manual transmissions, they are more fun, and sportier. I just love the feel of the shift...

Ok, now to the question

I have no clue what all is involved in doing the swap for option #3.

I basically need a parts list with a ball-park estimate of costs.

There is a junk yard not far that i could scope out, but there are not many manual Explorers to salvage from.

If someone could explain kinda how things work with transmissions, and what all would need to be taken out, and what all needed to be put in, then that would prolly be the coolest thing anyone could do right now.

So, parts list, est. prices, where to get.

A guy over at www.stangnet.com did a swap with his auto to manual for about 1600 doing it himself, and that was with a King Cobra clutch and such....

Option #2 Option #2! Any idea how much that option would run? How much more power would you expect to gain?

i don't have exact numbers for you, but people have already done it and they love it. The cam is like $150 or so, and i have not priced out all the other stuff for it...but i can get them all installed from a guy that works at a badarse mustang shop around my house for only 200...

This option is the cheapest of them all...

I am seriously considering all of them, i just some poiting to go there.

I really wanna a manual, so if anyone can help out...

I'd go with the new cam and rockers and a few other bolt on engine mods. I dont think having a manual in an explorer would be very sporty. Automatics are much faster with shifting (unless you plan on power shifting :nono: ).

do the cam and a top-end rebuild

I think #2..

You dont neccaserely want a manual in an SUV or truck cuz they are so far to shift, it takes up alot of time to shift it.

98FordX24: What is "power shifting"? Is that just shifting without the clutch? If so, it can be done fine you just have to know when to shift at what RPMs for what gears(although i dont recomend it)

go for #2. first, you cant use a manual out of an X, because yours is a V8, and the V8's never came with a manual. V6 and V8 have 2 different bell-patterns. for the cost of the manual swap (tremec, TKO, or whatever you get), you could get a cam, lifters, springs, roller rockers (go with 1.6's) AND have the heads ported and possibly bigger valves installed. all this will give you an easy 300hp on the motor. and that is a conservative estimate.

If i did the manual, then i would also put in 4.10 gears...

The cam and accesories would be nice too...i can get those in for pretty cheap..

What all is involved for a top end rebuild?

A full rebuild prolly isn't far behind....

Right, thats why I said :nono: . You can get trannys with no syncros and hardened gears that can withstand that kind of abuse but I wouldnt want that for a daily driver. I have a friend with a subaru impreza RS turbo charged. After blowing 2, 3, and 4 within 2 days (hes not a very good driver) he got a tranny with no syncros. He has yet to blow a gear, but when you try to drive normal it grinds and is kinda jerky.

whats involved in the manual swap? how much would a manual cost from the dealer since i dont have much junkyards around? what would installation go for? i just payed $200 to get my tranny serviced by the dealer, i think it was slippin. i would LOVE to do a swap.
