delay going into and out of 4L

Why does it sometimes take a while to go into 4L or out of 4L? (97 Sport 5 speed manual)
It is bothersome at times going into and out of 4L, as it hold your suspence whether it is going to change states.
I change modes as the book says, press in the clutch, put it in reverse, move the knob and cross my fingers

its normal... it is a shift on the fly system, but sometime wont shift if it thinks it is unsafe to do so.......

Do you have your foot on the brake too? I think you need to. And wait a sec or 2 after you switch to 4HI before turning to 4LOW
