Diablo Tuner for '10 Explorer 4.0L V6

Bit of a typo there, the V6 has the 5r55w 5 speed. The V8 has the 6 speed.

an interesting CAI read, its true.

Don't worry, I have a V6 too, but I knew what I was getting into from that angle and wasn't expecting more power than I have.

That's a really great example, 300. As I think about it more today, I'm willing to bet if this tuner thing doesn't work, I'm going to leave it alone. :(

Why was my '97 Explorer 4.0 more powerful than this '10 4.0?

What spark plugs do you have right now?

What spark plugs do you have right now?

Thats a great question, I bet they are the stock plugs. I've only owned this Explorer from about 80K, so I think tonight we'll pull one and take a look. It sure wont hurt to replace them. And cheap too.

Spark plugs don´t necessarily increase performance but the worn or wrong one will take off some. A worn or incorrect gaped spark plug will rob power.

I recently had some experience with the spark plugs, 2006-2010 explorers come from factory with motorcraft sp-500 (AGSF22FM) which is a platinum tipped plug. If you go online or ask your dealer they will say you have to use SP-412 which is a plain old copper plug, is listed as nickel. I tried the Sp-412 and the truck ran like $hit. The only thing positive I did notice is that the Sp-412 has an extended tip for a better combustion. I have yet to try a set of NGK iridiums with the extended tip. I know it goes against what people say that you shouldn´t run nothing besides Motorcraft or Autolite.

The finer the tip the less voltage that is needed for the spark to jump the gap. So in theory a fine wire platinum or iridium should yield better performance. Probably nothing noticeable. But if you already had worn plugs switching to a fine wire one would feel like a big power increase.

Ah yes, regular maintinance and using the correct parts do tend to keep an engine running properly.

As for performance, you want the biggest explosion possible going on in that cylinder. Biggest wins are Bigger CI, higher compression, More air in, and faster exhaust out.

Update Tune#2 Performance Day One

So, I'm not sure if it's just the nice weather or if I'm a little tired this morning, but I actually think there was a difference this morning. I didn't kick it down or WOT at all, but I noticed I was driving to work way faster than I usually do.

There are a few hills where the combination of the speed and grade always give me a challenge, I'll be on them later tonight and I'll for sure know if there is an improvement.

Why not try something like this, try and put that tuner to use.

No worries about emissions testing in the great white north, unless you are in BC. Down with the EGR valve.

I also thought about getting a set until I read the FAQs

http://www.jbaheaders.com/faq.asp

What kind of performance gains can I expect from my headers?

Typical performance gains with the addition of JBA Headers on a fuel injected V-8 will be anywhere from 10-25 horsepower and similar numbers for torque. For V-6 applications you will see a gain of 10-15 horsepower. How much performance you gain will depend on the condition of your vehicle and the upgrades you have already made. On supercharged applications you will see a more dramatic increase, as much as 40+ horsepower.

That's about par for bolt-on's. Going to have to squeeze that baby if you want significant gains. When you do that things tend to brake and get expensive, and don't make very good daily drivers. Nothing makes a power jump like cubic inches.

Nothing like forced induction. It´s expensive but you will feel it!
I would love to have a V8, but I don´t have them in my country, only the V6.

Back to the headers, the problem is that they don´t really tell you how much is the gain 10-15 (crank I assume) is a ballpark figure. Let´s say is 10 at the crank, so it would be like 7-8 at the wheels. 15 at the crank would be like 10-12 at the wheels.

And of course, the down side is that they no longer have the comfort of the stock manifolds, so they always have a price. A lot of people are fine but for that little power I´m not willing to get in return more vibration and exhaust noise.

Update Tune#2 Performance Day Two

Ok, there is noticeable difference. I can't hear a change in the shift points per say, but I'm defiantly not begging for more power the way I was before.

I suppose that there would also be credence in taking the tune back to factory default and seeing if it's been the two tanks of high octane fuel that may have been a contributing factor.

I'm also test driving a 2010 Limited today. They're is one in Dartmouth for sale that I really like. I'll test drive one here before flying across the country to look it. I'll see what the V8 feels life, and from what I've heard, the V8 better knock my socks off.

No, V8 won't knock your socks off unless it has a tune... ;)

(On the other hand I have never driven V6 Explorer so I don't know how lazy it feels?)

For V8 the Diablo intune (what I have) made a very noticeable difference in throttle response and low RPM torque. I'm still puzzled why Ford did ship the V8 Explorers with such lame stock tune...

So if you end up trading in for V8, make sure to keep your tuner!

Dartmouth is my neck of the woods. For market comparison, my 2010 XLT (everything except leather and nav) with 47000km came in at just under 18k for a very clean truck. Fairley and Stevens was where I purchased mine. I loaded up with 3 yr 60000km comprehensive Ford warranty as well. I purchased in June.

Update Tune#3 Back to Factory Default

Okey Dokey, put everything back to factory and did a ton of driving yesterday, and again this morning. No difference. I still have more power than when I started, and I'm willing to attribute it to the higher octane fuel.

Test drove an Adrenalin yesterday, not that impressed, don't get me wrong, it's got more than the V6 (especially without screaming while WOT) but like matsavol said, it didn't knock my socks off.

The Diablo didn't make a significant difference for the $600 price tag. Luckily, this one was on loan from a friend who would have only charged me $450 for it, if it made an improvement, which I can't say it did.

So if I need to install a CAI, and other performance improving mods, then can you really say the tuner helps?

Verdict - Start with high octane fuel, then try a tuner.

I looked at a '10 Adrenalin yesterday, very clean, and I really liked it. I was very ready to get it and then sell my XLT privately. The salesman (who was quite with it) got really upset when I started looking at Limited prices and started thinking that I may not want the Adr. He tried the "give them your final offer and walk away" tactic...I left the dealership.

Here is the link to the Limited in Dartmouth

If you look at it, let me know what you think. I'm questioning that it's actually 55,000km, I'm willing to bet they left out the 1 (155,000km).

MacPhee's is a reputable dealership.. I wouldn't doubt the odometer read... That price doesn't strike me odd, for this particular market. My bet is that it isn't about to jump off the lot .. you likely could beat the price down a grand or more..

any update, ExplorerII ?

yeah for a tune only on a 4.0, even if you gained 8rwhp, you wouldn't feel a difference. Even a custom tune, like mine from breenspeed, they really can't throw 100% at it. A dyno tune and they can squeeze everything out. Even for our V8's, just a tune makes no huge gains. Even with my mods and tune, I don't feel like it's crazy fast or tons of HP now. Though I'm use to Cobra's and Lightnings.
Also shorty headers will never yield nothing but usually an average of 5rwhp on mustangs, so I know they won't add more on our V8's and def nothing on a V6. They are pretty much a last resort for guys that have mods and want to do something even if it's 5rwhp or cause they can't afford long tubes. Sound will change a little with shorties though.
For cold air intakes, they still work. I've datalogged it a crap ton in cold and hot weather. Yes, you do suck in warm air and your IAT's are increasing but that's at a stop sign, red light or drive thru..where performance doesn't matter. The second I would start driving, the IAT's would stop and start decreasing. The faster I went, the faster the IAT's would drop to normal operating temps. You have to remember that you do have ram air coming in so that the engine heat does escape from under the vehicle or back of the top rear hood. I did leave my rubber air director in, have the filter angled pretty close to it's area and did add a heat shield that I had extra from my lighting jlt intake.
The biggest issue you have to hurdle is the weight. And if you have a AWD all the time system, that makes a difference too. It's hard to gets these vehicles moving when you weight around 4600lbs vs say a mustang at 3600. And you can tell cause my 05 Mustang GT stock was 300/320 and my merc is 292/300. And with my mods, I know my past 05 Mustang would still smoke my merc.

any update, ExplorerII ?

Hey Craigwell, sorry for the delay.

Ya, so the conclusion I came to after testing that '10 Adrenalin was that my V6 was actually OK and I was just wanting too much from it. I didn't notice much of a power difference between the V8 and my V6, it sounded very different, just didn't seem to have any better pick-up.

I'm at 123,000km on it now, and I have the extra warranty to 150,000km, so I'm thinking I'll sell it next fall and move into something larger. (F-150 with the EcoBoost perhaps).
